Thanks for your message. It's been some time since I had the last posting here. The reason: I have been struggling with the way the school is managing the Learning Center, especially the use of the library. We are trying hard to let the school realize how fortunate they are to have this facility and therefore maximize their efforts toward using it for the development of the children. We have yet to see positive response from them. Re-your vacation that's great. But we won't be there when you come. Make the most out of your time and hope you enjoy. Will talk more via email soon.

Efforts to improve the facilities have been going on. A new, nice looking medicine cabinet, patient bed, and library bulletin board have just been added. Also being constructed are rest and storage rooms at rear part of the Learning Center. Rest rooms were not provided in the original plan of the ALC since the existing toilets are just 50 meters away, but we need an attached CR for reasons connected to the Alternative Learning Systems (ALS) program of the Dept of Education. (See previous msg re-ALS). We are still gathering info regarding the recent ALS conference held here--will post news very soon). Also we will try to update the photos in the website.

Sorry for the lapse of update information about the Learning Center for some time. This does not mean there had not been any activity since the last update was posted. It was just plain neglect--we know you have always been eager to know what's going on. This time since Phase III of our project--the use of the facilities--is mainly the responsibility of the school, we were expecting the school to give us feedback. So the source of information is right from the school. Fortunately, one from among us is based in the barrio, so expect more flow of information from now on. We will also continue to post information from other sources,, including you, as they become available.

We just talked about the use of the facilities in the preceding message. There were some events that are comforting to note. The reception (lunch) was held in the Agape Learning Center (ALC) which was so nicely prepared and furnished to the delight of people. We regret that no picture of this scene was posted in our webpage. Then last month the Federation of all Parents, Teachers and Community Associations (PTCA) in all barrios of San Quintin held their meeting in the ALC for reason that the visitors wanted to see the building. In fact a member of the Coordinating Council was invited to answer questions of the group about the building. Then this coming July the Division Alternative Learning System (ALS) Conference for the 4th, 5th and 6th congressional districts of Pangasinan will be held in the ALC. This is nation-wide program of the Dept of Education and Pangasinan Division II has selected the facility as its venue for the conference. There are over a hundred district supervisors, school heads, and coordinators expected to attend. This says a lot! Talking about the Alternative Learning Systems Program, watch out for a coming message that is exciting and challenging to all of us.

On to Phase 3. Phase 3 involves the use of the facilities for their intended purposes. This is the most important as it relates to the intellectual development of the students. A nice building with adequate facilities and study materials means nothing if they are not fully used to improve teaching and learning processes which was our ultimate goal for initiating the project. With this, the responsibility lies more on the school staff for their diligence and creativity. We are impressing this upon the school staff thru the Learning Center Board. We will be asking for feedback during meetings of the Board and we will keep you informed.

This reports to you the status of Phase 2 (furnishing materials: chairs, tables, shelves, books, computer, shelves, refrigerator, microwave, etc.) to the Learning Center. Donations amount to P144,134. Names of donors including those for Phase 1 (building) are on file in the Library. The amount was spent for wooden tables (9), plastic tables (10, chairs (106), electric fans (5), refrigerator (1), microwave oven (1), computer (1), books, first aid supplies, water system, etc. Though we have completed the basic items for Phase 2, we are all encouraged to continue providing books, computers and other learning materials. Also in a previous Learning Center Board meeting the following were proposed: upgrade of medicine cabinet, first aid center bed, and canteen cabinets. Another critical need being worked out is printer for the computer. With Phase 2 practically done, we are now into Phase 3 (see next message).

I really believe that we setting the gold standard with the signing of MOU and I’m sure that organizations will be interested with your progress. The event last Feb 10th went on as planned. It was an affair to reckon with. The parade, the program, the fellowship lunch, and the coronation/dance activities were fantastic. Watch out for photo updates very soon. One part of the program was the activation of the Agape Learning Center Board based on the Memorandum of Understanding. The seven officers were elected as follows: Cesar Navalta, Teacher in Charge as ex-officio chairman; Lino Ferrer, vice chair; Dencio Garcia, secretary; Marietta Agabin, treasurer; Fernando Lopez, asst sec-treasurer; Regino Ferrer, building custodian; and Julita Ferrer, auditor. Board also includes three advisors (non-voting): Dr. Virginia Cabe (District Supervisor) and the two Barangay Captains. The officers were inducted and already had two meetings (regular meeting is every last Friday of the month). Issues discussed were reports on the recent fund raising muse contest, project's phase 2, and oncoming projects for the school and the Learning Center. Accounting of funds now, including those coming from donors, is under the Board since the MOU vested the Board responsibility to oversee the use and maintenance of the Center. This also includes raising funds for the above purpose. We will be issuing an update report (to be mailed)very soon.

One activity that will take place during the 10th event is the activation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)that was agreed upon between us (Donor's group) and the school when we turned over the Center to them last April. This MOU basically continues the partnership between us and the school in overseeing the use, operation and maintenance of the Learning Center. Under the MOU the Agape Learning Center Board composed of nine members from the school and the donors group was organized and the officers will be installed. Watch out for more details about this MOU.

Preparations are underway for the coming Agape Learning Center Anniversry on Feb. 10th. The event is spearheaded by the school staff. A muse contest was held for fund raising purposes for the needs of the school and the Learning Center. A gross amount of PHP200,000 was raised--very encouraging indeed to help meet the school's needs. Activities on the 10th include beauties' parade in the morning, program, fellowship lunch, and coronation in the evening. It's going to be a whole-day affair. This is also a reunion among those of us from abroad going home for a vacation to our barrio. Watch for for more information.

There's possibiltiy that you are part of the family tree. In late 1980's there used to be reunions of Ferrer Clan in entire Pangasinan. We have many barrio mates in Hongkong, some 20 plus of them--if you are not aware of it. We wrote to one of them--Alona Ferrer Romero--last month informing them about Project Phase 2 and the proposed Balikbayan 2007 and for her to spread the word to others. We just got a reply with a commitment along with four others to donate for chairs and tables. The very admirable thing about them is the prompt and positive respond they readily lend to a good cause. It was the same attitude they displayed when were were building the Learning Center when they again pitched is as a group. And to think that they are not as much in a place as many of us are--they are domestic helpers with near meager means and forfeiting teh joy and peace of being with their families left behind in the barrio--yet how marvelous their attitude is. They assured to get the others into the fold. In a day or two we will be sending out the Donation Tally Sheet that will show the progress of giving to Phase 2 two weeks after we sent you the tally sheet. The result is very encouraging. We need to furnish the Center with these basic needs--it's now almsot three months into the school year. If you still feel like giving, please do so now. Never any help, whatever you decide to give, is so small to be counted. Small resources when pooled together achieve great things.

One new computer, six stand electric fans, and three book shelves for the Learning Center--these are all coming from the Acosta's (Roxas & Betty). What a boost! For the rest of us who have not selected from the list what to give, watch out. You may run out of something to give from those listed items. But of course, you always give in cash for the reading materials. Thanks to Roxas and Betty.

Thank you both for posting messages. It's encouraging to hear from our barrio mates. Will encourage others to do the same? Jheng, it seems you are working in Taiwan, are there other barrio mates working there? Tell them about the coming balikbayan reunion in February 2007 and also to give any donation to the Agape Learning Center. Your donation of electronic organ is very good. Thank you very much. I think the Labuan School is the only one that has a band. Your donation will help them a lot. Your Mommy Rose is really great. She looks like Gloria Romero on the pictures in the website.

Thank you for your kindness. Your donation of a microwave oven is certainly a prized help to the school staff and children--what an amenity it is that instantly turns cold to steaming hot soup or the like. That they migth not have even seen such a thing is not far fetched--that's how impoverished they are. So wanting that it reminds me when I was in the school helping the volunteer barrio folks worked on the landscape during the week before the building turnover in April. I had my leg bruised, blood oozing, and the school didn't even have any medication, not even any band aid available. And to think the 200 or so school population are subjected to any injury any time. I know they will persevere and overcome, as I had been through in my youth there from the harsh realities of a deprived home/school life. But it remains for us, driven mainly by a sense of compassion, to share part of what appears to be trivial in our vantaged life, but is otherwise a precious help for the "least of our brethren." May our tribe increase!

Rose and I had the privilege of taking part in the turnover program. Rose took part on the ceremonial ribbon cutting and handing the keys. I spoke on the history of the Learning Center and on the kick-off of Phase II of the project. It was all praises for the building from our visitors. One happy offshoot was the challenge generated by our project to our visitors from other communities (e.g. District Supervisor, a Rotary Club guy who donated gifts to the graduates and promised free papers & notebooks to all school children for next school year) who vowed to build their own learning center saying ours is serving as a model. Thanks, our efforts are turning out for more good for other communities!

We are so thrilled as we approach the turnover of the Agape Learning Center on April 3. We knew the odds that we had to face right from the start, that we viewed it as a experiment of sorts: whether just a few common people could rally the support of their barrio mates (mostly poor farmers) to to sustain the project, whether the pangasinan.org could be an effective tool to help realize this project, whether other people (web surfers) who are strangers to our community could be drawn to provide support. The result speaks for itself. Though we still have a long way to pursue Phase II--providing furnitures, books, equipment, etc. we continue to persevere and trust that with unity of purpose and with the spirit of AGAPE we will prevail, as the Lord will it. We share with you the joy that we feel as we finish this phase of our project. Thank you for all your support.

I have been here onsite where the action is since March 25 preparing for the turnover of the building on April 3. We are finishing the last kinks--partition and landscaping--and retouching everything to have fresh look. What is so thrilling and enccouraging is the commitment of the community in the landscaping work. Through the PTA they were divided into four groups of over 20 each for four days for free labor. And with that scorching heat, oh my! What an agape spirit displayed! I also had meetings with the school staff and our leaders here for several issues. I will post more soon. For now be encouraged and pray for us.

Thank you for your insight into what the name AGAPE stands for by referring to 1 Corinthians 1:13, the Bible's love chapter. The term agape is originally a Greek term for love used in the original text of the New Testament. It quite differs from the meaning of love as we know it in English in different forms--romantic or sexual love, close friendship or brotherly love, or just a pleasant feeling of something or someone. Agape is self-giving love that demands soemthing of us. It is sacrifice of self for the sake of others. The passage describes loves as the greatest of all spiritual gifts, rendering gifts of speaking, wisdom, knowledge, benevolence, and faith as nothing without it. Just note its qualities: IS patient and kind; NOT jealous, arrogant and provoked; DOES NOT brag, act rudely, seek its own, or harbor grudge. Practical? They appear unnatural to our human nature--our natural self. But as Christians we are supposed to have put off our natural old self (Ephesians 4:22-24). With humility we named our project after this kind of love and because God Himself is love (1 John 4:16) it is in effect in His name. May it be our passion always to give Him honor and glory through the Agape Learning Center.

As discussed earlier in my latest message, you may view this website at www.leapfrogschoolhouse.com The content gives you everything you know about This software through an interactive web based presentation and will take through step-by-step instruction for this particular software program. If you have a problem accessing the website on the Pangasinan.org site, you may cut and paste the address on your web browser. Please consider looking at this software because it is a powerful tool for the school staff to gage how each student is performing at his/her grade level. All the children can benefit from this interactive device since they can go directly to the new library and be able to learn the basics at their own pace. Ladies and gentleman, I’m really excited about this project because this makes learning fun for our children. It is up to us to make that leap from mediocrity to greatness. I, too, was affected from the way I was taught during my elementary years in the Philippines when our school system label our students from slow to fast learners through grade level segregation, i.e. Section A thru C. Thanks for your message. You are right--sources of instructional materials are all around. I tried to get into the website you gave, but unable to open details of the materials there. The possible problem is how these fit into the level of need of the children there, especially the language. So it goes back to finding out the need, plus knowing the contents of the materials too. For the latter I collected books (used)on such core subjects science, grammar, math and history. By their nature I assume they are relevant. Last week I asked one who had an article in a newspaper and in the business of conducting English pronunciation service if I could purchase some materials. Offhand we know the relevance. (I'm a culprit of this problem.) I was expecting all sorts of helpful materials--written, video, audio. Amazingly, he offered none, but suggested to go to amazon.com. My current work is ordering textbooks for the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have seen the enormous and wide variety of instructional materials given to students here. Let's continue collecting what are made available.

It's now definite. The inauguration and turnover of the building to the school is on April 3. This will coincide with the school graduation day. At first it was planned that we hold some elaborate program and activities, assuming that many especially those staying abroad could go home for the affair. We also wanted to prepare a souvenir program that will serve as a lasting record of the building of the learning center, the history of the school and barrio, and many others. As we started, however, to task some people to gather data and prepare write-ups, we realized some hardships due to the short time left before the affair. Also, a survey showed only a few of those living abroad could make it to the occasion because of problem in scheduling vacation in so short a time of notice. So we decided to forego the initial plan and hold a simple turnover ceremony instead. From these circumstances came out a suggestion, which many have already welcomed, that next year we will mark the first year anniversary of the learning center with a get-together--a homecoming and reunion with the local folks. This will allow enough time to inform all Labuanians whithersoever dispersed and to prepare for vacation. More importantly, as the learning center by then will have been in use for one year, and Phase II of the project (providing instructional materials) will have been in motion along with other programs that we planned to achieve, we could evaluate the results of our efforts for the school and community. This is more thrilling to look forward to. So, folks, try as you may to attend the April 3rd affair, otherwise, set your eyes to the GRAND HOMECOMING OF 2007.

It certainly is a big boost to Phase 2 of our project. We are excited to find out how these would relate to the currect school curriculum and teaching methodologies in the RP public school system. I will find this out when I go to home next month in conjunction with the turnover of the building. I will have the chance to explore with the school staff about the teaching/learning environment so that we could focus our efforts with relevance to the need. The latest pictures of the Agape Learning Centre look great. This is the fruit of Agape, meaning Love. It reminds me of the Love Chapter of the Holy Bible, 1 Cor. 13. We might have the best of faith and give everything we have but without love, it's nothing. The Agape Learning Centre encapsulates and bears everything, the small and the big things, that were given in love. We should give our big and warm applause to Manong Gorio for his leadership and dedication to this project. He was not deterred by mountains (problems) nor the oceans (distance) associated with the building of the centre. With his very strong faith in God, he was able to move mountains, negotiate the oceans and unite not only the Labuanians but many others worldwide in realising the work of Love in a place that could now be called Love One. Our Salute to you, Manong.

Manong Gorio, Project Coordinators and the rest of my kailians in the global community, We have started something that is so special with the Labuan Project. We should not stop there but continue our efforts for furnishing this project and give our kids a head start in their formative years. If you give our children the proper learning environment and the tools to hone their skills, they will eventually bear fruit and make changes in our towns, communities, provinces, and our country. Would you believe that a Barangay like Labuan is a hot topic around the world? We are breaking grounds in the fundraising business. We are sure some less develop countries and other towns in the Philippines are looking at our project and wonder if they can pull their resources and come up with same project like ours. For our children’s sake, let us keep the Labuan project going and hopefully our neighboring barangays would be able to achieve their projects as well. What we dream today we can achieve tomorrow. Respectfully yours, Marc S.

Thanks for your email message. I emailed you back in reply. For information of our "kailian" who are accessing this website let me relate the substance of that email exchange. We cherish your kind support and expect to receive soon the learning materials (audio books) you sent for our learning center. With respect to the effect of voltage difference in RP for CD/cassette player you like to purchase here, I have no idea at all. For computers it does not matter as there are built-in features that could adapt to different voltages (a computer repair instructor told me). It's probably more practical to buy the players in the Phil. May the Lord bless you for your kindness.

This is to answer your email, to quote "When are you sending books to the Philippines? Is it too late to send? Where do we send it?" We are sending books to the Labuan Elem. School of Labuan, San Quintin, Pangasinan. This is the beneficiary of this Learning Center Project in this website. It's never late to send books. This is a continuing project. In fact we just sent the first box (door to door cargo) this weekend. We appreciate your help. I don't know if your source is here in teh US, or in teh Phil. Either way it's a big help and we thank you for that.

This is to announce that the inauguration and turnover of the building to the school will take place April 3, 2005. This will coincide with the school's graduation. Unless there is any critical factor that will prevent us from proceeding with the event, this schedule will remain is. We are encouraging as many as there are among us residing abroad who could take vacation time to attend this joyous occasion. More details about the event will be posted later.

We have decided to adopt the name "Agape Learning Center" for our project. Agape means love, but it is the kind of love marked by unselfish and sacrificial giving. It is the kind of love exemplified on the cross by Jesus, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). We can never matched the breadth and depth of God's love, but its essence, as in this project, we can apply in some measure. This was what motivated us to start the project and it remains the same as we pursue our goal to the end. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

With the impending completion of the building and its turnover to the school we can now plan for the next phase of teh project. This includes providing the library with reading materials and equipment that will help the school children in their intellectual development which is our ultimate goal in this project. Options are unlimited and the cost is manageable. We only need to ensure that materials are relevant and effective for the intended purpose. The multipurpose room will be used for varied purposes that will also benefit the whole community. Aside from a meeting room it will be used a center for first aid (medical), social services, skills development, etc. We will soon post details of these plans, the goals we like to achieve, and the resources we will put in place. So watch out for the next messages

We are on for the drive to raise the remaining amount of P100,000 we need to finish the building. This will cover floor tiling, painting and part of electrical work. We know you have sacrificed much already in your giving, but try if you still can find a way to help raise this amount. We will try hard to finish the building next month which marks the start of construction a year ago. Please help carry the burden. Chip in any amount that will buy a few gallons of paint or some pieces of tile. It's always pooling our small resources together that we are able to overcome the odds and achieve what we have committed to accomplish.

So I'm doing it through the web hoping you visit this page again. You may then email or write me a msg on this page as you please. Thanks for your kind impressions toward our project. Portraying it as "a blueprint for other barangays" as it draws inspiration from people like you who desire to help their communities is very encouraging. We are delighted to know that you have an ongoing project in your barangay that has a plan for a learning center, too. We are pleased to share information from own experience for your purposes. Yes, the total cost may reach $16,000 when building is finished. In fact that was the estimate (P880,000) almost three years ago (includes labor at 35% of material cost). Material prices increased a bit but we were able to reduce cost by contracting out parts of the work to different people at negotiated cost. With regards to labor donation by the community the rate was one-third of labor pay to be donated since many could hardly afford cash donation. Come to think about the overall effect, it even afforded them a means of some modest income which is scarce, as we all know, in our communities and much more, of course, for the long term effect of the project to their children. Hope this answers your inquiries and let us know if we can be of further help. (Lino Ferrer)

The latest update photos show we are close to finishing the building. The remaining work includes electrical, partition, ceiling, tile floor and painting. Available funds cover electrical and ceiling which are now being done. Remaining pledges, if paid, can cover the partition. We need to raise funds more for tiling and painting (about 100,000 pesos) to finish the building. Then we will go into Phase II which will cover furnishings (tables, chairs, books, reading materials, equipment, etc). Unlike Phase I (building), Phase II appears easier to accomplish given less cost involved. Details for this phase will be posted later as we need to talk with school staff to know their relevant needs. Just keep up the faith and we will run the race. As always we seek everybody's help including sympathizers who could relate to our cause.

This is to let you all know that work on the project has slowed down because of the farming season. This is the reason why we haven't posted an updated photo of the building. Our workers are busy in the fields and hopefully, as report indicates, work will resume by mid July when farm work will have been almost over. The windows have been installed and the doors will be in place any time from now. Next will be the flooring (no tiles yet) and finishing the walls (palitada). We have funds to cover all these, thanks to our dear sympathizers for their help. But we need to struggle for funds for the remaining work--ceiling, electrical, partition, tiling and painting. We will persevere. Let's chip in a little more, sacrificially. And to others who may come across this message and be moved by our cause, we welcome and thank you for your help.

I was then curious about your identify but you preferred not to share it. And now ... to know that you are the daughter of Don Baldo! We thank you for your donation in his memory. We remember him for his kindness and humility. He certainly deserves to be remembered always and allowing us, through your donation, to carve his memory in our project is an honor and pleasure. Labuan is grateful for your help. This is to confirm that the Patricio Zulueta (see earlier message) who, along with his wife, posted their donation to our project is the popular town councilor of the 1960's. I got an email from his son-in-law Manny Natividad telling that when the Don was told about the Labuan Project, he immediately sent his donation. The email mentioned that "during elections he ahd almost 100% win in Labuan." Pay back time? Not necessarily. Don Zulueta is naturally a good-natured, kind and friendly man. His gesture of help whose beneficiaries barely know him, if at all, is indicative of that remarkable character. Don Zulueta is now in his 80's and how we wished there were more people of his bred. Thank you Don and Mrs. Patricio Zulueta.

In light of the recent food poisoning tragedy in a school in Bohol that killed 27 schoolchildren and hospitalized over a hundred more, we are very justfied in having our project that includes a canteen. One of the problems that Education officials raised as a result of this tragedy was the absence of school canteen that could have been the source of food for the children. It is recalled that the immediate need that the school in Labuan stressed when we visited in 2003 to explore a scholarship program was a canteen. A concessionaire was then the source of food for the school children but they were eating in open space and subjected to the health hazards around. Of course the project later was expanded to include a library and multipurpose room. Aren't you glad we are doing the right thing to safeguard the health of the children?

We could not have achieved what we have attained thus far--construction in progress--were it not for the fascinating wonders of the web in facilitating communication with ease and speed to our people everywhere. An awesome wonder still is how the web has drawn from friends and other people who are complete strangers to us and our place cherished values of generosity and selflessness as they offered their help for "anything for a good cause" as one precious sympathizer put it. Thanks for your message that spells out God's truth about giving. Yes, He loves a cheerful giver. He tells us to delight on all the things that we do and that we do them not for men but but for Him. It is not how much one gives but the kind of heart that gives that matters. It's external versus internal. Under God's economy He looks at the latter. You are a blessing to the school kids and God will bless you as well.

Thanks to the Webmaster for posting our Learning Center Project on the website's opening page. One motive we suppose is to show a different form of "giving back to the community"--one purpose that this website wanted to encourage among its users. By no means however does it relegate others like the backpack projects to inferior quality. We are honored by the exposure. In fairness to web readers who like to know more circumstances about the project, let me explain some details apart from those already in our web page, lest something can be drawn from its strengths and weaknesses for any purpose they may serve. The idea was conceived in July 2003, ambitious so it seems for a small barrio and to be undertaken by a handful of former residents of meager standing (a retired sailor, a welder, clerks, caregivers, custodial workers). This core group has been rallying the support of their barrio mates who are msotly semi-skilled and domestic helpers abroad, and those living locally who are mostly small farmers. One common bod among them is that they all attended the same barrio school that they now wanted to help through this project. Raising funds has been hard given the odds. It tests our resolve to achieve the goal. We persevered even if doantions came in trickles. We asked friends for help and we were touched by their kindness. Grandchilredn who may never see the birthplace of their grandparents were too wiling to share part of their allowances. Proceeds from recycling sales were funneled to the project. Pennies became instant valuables. A recent visit to the barrio drew from the local folks donation of free labor in the construction in lieu of cash which was understandable due to their difficulties. We sought government's help, but the response was passive, so we abandoned it. After a year we raised 60% of the material cost that allowed us to start the construction. We are at rock bottom financially as work proceeds, but we continue to persevere. There is hope behind the struggles as we stay focused on our goal for the sake of the school children. It's a legacy not for us to be remembered by, but mainly as a means to help insure a better future fo this and later generations. Above all it is a way of giving back to God who gave us these resources in the first place for His own glory. He is the Great Provider. We keep our faith in His Providence. We like to thaank all of you who have given moral and financial help to our cause. Please see how your help is transforming a mere idea of a Learning Center into a concrete reality--"a dream about to be true" as the Webmaster captioned it--as you view the photos which we will update as work progresses. We continue to appeal for help from all who share with our ideals of giving back to the community. Our pledge page is a click away from here if you are so moved and for this, even now, we say, "Thank you and God bless you."

A couple of times I attempted to email you about the project's developments but the message failed to get through. I used your address without the "dao." The blockage message is something on "proper authentication." Anyway, I hope you have been monitoring our website for interesting developments including the construction progress. We like to hear from all of you there about your impressions or ideas. So if you could use the website for thoughts that would be great. May you all have a prosperous year 2005.

On behalf of the Labuan Learning Center Project Coordinating Committee, may I thank you for dropping by our web page. Obviously you have seen the project we are pursuing and the cause that it aspires to achieve for our barrio. It struck a soft chord in your hearts as shown by your generous offer of help. We are deeply touched and encouraged by your kindness and we appreciate your help coming as it does when construction work is at its peak and greatly boosting much needed resources. Let me echo to you, too, the gratitude of the school's 150 or so pupils and teachers (please see photo page)who are the real beneficiaries of your kindness. May God richly bless you for your goodness.

We have gone a long way and still have a long way to go. Don't grow weary but be encouraged. Let us all see how, together, we can help finish this for the sake of the school children. Thanks to all of you who have generously given to this project.

One kind-hearted lady who came across our previous penny-pennies donation offered her own collection of pennies. The count was $6.55 which is enough to buy one-half of all the rivets needed for the project. Will anyone offer her own collection of pennies for the remaining half? Appears small but it counts.

The go signal is on for the start of the construction of the Learning Center. We sent an email the other day to our own Milio Emanil who will lead the construction crew. He is at the same time the Vice Chairman of the Construction Committee, along with Ben Daproza, Dionisio Romero and Doming Ferrer as members. We are just awaiting word for the actual start date, so watch for the next announcement in this website, plus we plan to take snapshots of the work progress and post them here for all of us to see. Isn't it exciting that we will soon see the fruit of our efforts? In the meantime there is still much work to do to meet our collection shortfall. You have noticed in the pledge page how friends have been coming up to help. No amount of help is so little as not to be counted and appreciated. We need everybody's help.

I went for a haircut to my favorite barber Mang Pinoy. He has no shop. Just call, either you go to his house or he comes over. He charges $5.00 either way. Would give him $3.00 tip. You may think that's generous? It's $10 in the shops. What's good about this episode--he donated his $8 fee to the Learning Center Project. That's buying all the masking tapes and sanding paper for the project! Thank you Mang Pinoy.

You know about those little pennies, nickels, dimes and some sprinkling of quarters that we receive as loose change when we buy something from the market? We eventually dump them in a little basket--of course, kay Mrs. yan, right? I came upon this basket almost filled to the brim--a couple of year's collection probably. Tinimbang--it's 5 pounds. I asked Mrs. if she could just donate it to the project. She agreed. Binilang. Total count: 30 quarters, 125 dimes, 88 nickels, and 850 pennies! And there's even 54 pesos of Philippine coins. The 850 nickels would buy for the project 70 hollow blocks, with 12 cents for a hollow block at 6.50 pesos per. How about that--penny-pennies for our project for the remaining amount we are raising?

It was for this reason that I went to the barrio recently. I chanced upon and talk with your brother during Manong Abin's (Emanil) funeral last Oct. 25. In your visit to Israel--there are a number of our "kabaryuan" there aside from Merla--how about selling the project to them for some shekels? We are now preparing to start the construction of the project. I will be taking a week vacation to the barrio on October 21st and hopefully be able to have preliminary arrangement for the start. I expect to do the following: explain the project more fully to the people and seek their involvement, discuss with construction people about the details of the building and timeframe for the construction. This last one is just preliminary. Roxas, our Building Committee chairman, will also visit the barrio by mid-November to firm up the exact start of the construction. Of course, this visit is also a long deserved one for me to see the folks back home. Lift me up in your prayers for my safety and for positive result in achieving our goals. I will report back to you in this website when I return October 31st. (Manong G.)

You are most welcomed to continue sending your messages through this website and you may expect some reactions also. Just like now if you are kind enough to answer some questions--how are you related to the Andrada's in Tayug (e.g the late Major Jose Andrada, Eusebio Andrada of San Patricio, etc.)? About the Larioza's in San Quintin--think barrio Amaronan they are from? I also noticed when browsing through the Luna website that you are a Lunarian. That's something we have in common. Well, not to tire you with so many questions, I'll reserve the rest next message. Thank you.

You very well said it again--"think of enriching the future ... let us not forget where we came from." This is essentially the motivating factor for the learning center project. Whether you think of this in terms of the barrio as a whole, individually as a person, or both (which should be the case as they go hand in hand), does not lessen the relevance of the motivation behind the project. Of course, we are referring here specifically to the quality of life of the people (physically, economically, spiritually, etc)to be the end result of such activity. Simply put, how things looked then and how they look now and in the future determines whether help of any kind is needed. This is a very interesting subject to dwell on, but let's reserve it for some future time. Suffice it to say that while the landscape of the barrio has changed greatly--manipud ti sumagmamano laeng nga nakurapay nga balbalay nga agarup amin ket arwat kawayan ken pan-aw, ti bassit a populasyon, ti nalubo nga kalsada, ti arig paga-siket ti lugnak nga bit-ang nga agpa-laud ken dumalan ti eskuwelaan, ti makitam nga nuang ti kada balay (all of these have changed)--the quality of life has not, unfortunately. So we who live in this age should do something to make a difference. All we need is just a heart that cares for the less fortunate. We get much more by giving more. Thank you again for your encouraging message.

We are sorry for not being abile to inform you of developments concerning our project much earlier. In our previous message to you, we indicated that we had planned to start the project construction last March after a supposed bidding in February in order to get the lost construction cost possible. This did not happen. There was a recommendation by the Construction Committee to postpone the start of the construction due to big increase in the cost of construction materials. This normally happens during the few months before elections. As election is still in May we will assess the situation by then and issue a new announcement. One thing that we can assure you to happen--we will see to it that the project is finished within 2004. In the meantine, we appeal to those who have not gotten involved yet to submit and/or pay their pledges. The delay of the start of the project is allowing everybody a chance to re-think their commitment to the project and also a chance to reach those who have not been informed yet. We appeal to all to please help in contacting others who may not not about the project yet.

On behalf of the Coordinating Committee, I wish to apologize for not acknowledging your message sooner. You might be thinking that we have gone inactive, but no, we are alive and feel encouraged by your interesting message which supports what we are striving for our barrio. Agpayso ti kunam kabsat nga masapul ti panagkaykaysa ti lumugar tapno adda puwersa nga agaramid ti pagimbagan ti lugar. Saan nga masapul ti kinabaknang wenno turay tapno makatulong tayo. The truth is we are just common people with the desire to help our barrio. This is the first time that a concerned group united to do something for the barrio and for this we should not fail. As you said this is now the time to help the place were we came from. But you left us wondering. While there are sings in your message that indicate you are a "kabaryo-an", you preferred no to come openly as one. There is only one Castillo family in Labuan (Jessie, the family head is in Los Angeles, Calif) but we have no communication with him yet. Igf you are a part of this family (or even if notO) then we encourage you to join us and be a part of the action. You hage started to rally the support of all Labuanians anyway. Iti panagsayaat iti Pagilyan tayo nga Pilipinas ket mangrugi iti sitio wenno barangay. No agkaykaysa iti amin nga tao na iti sitio wenno barangay ket iti pagbanagan na ket agsayaat iti lugar, no amin nga barangay ket kasta iti aramiden, daytoy ili tayo nga Filipinas ket awan iti papanan na no di lumasbang. As the saying from one of the greatest person in the world, " Do what you can do for your country, and not what your country do for you". Kailyan, iti maysa nga umili ket makatulong iti pagilyan uray saan nga agturay iti ili. This is now the time to help the place where we came from. Do not wait, let helping hand an on going matter. There are many things that each and every one can do to improve the Philippines. We should not wait from the Government, we can do more. Think about socio-economic programs that we can start to improve our peoples' lives back home. Go home regularly and observe what we are missing their. I know their will be lots of hindrance but we "must" have to change the thinking of some people. We are all industrious, conscientius and couragious people that if we bind together, we succeed. Let us make the Philipines great again. I will not leave my address, somehow, I'll be checking this site.

Just to let you know I was able to make contact with our folks in Saudi Arabia lately. Earlier I mailed fliers to them about the project. There are 12 of them in our list there. There maybe more. They said they are going to meet this Friday. Let us be hopeful that they will respond positively.

Hi, folks. Our Grand lady did it again! That's Manang Juliana (Lopez) I'm referring to in the thick of our donation campaign, with her pledge. In case you don't know it, if you flip to the school pictures and see that arching school gate, that's donated by our dear Manang. What a kind and generous heart! Sapay ta paraburannaka ni Apo Diyos ti piya ken salun-at ti adu pay nga tawen, Manang. Of course, there's another building (a shade)in the school ground, partly seen in the pictures, that was donated by those working in Hongkong. Kadatayo nga saan pay nga nakarikna ti rag-o baeten ti pannakisaranay tayo kadagiti nasayaat nga aramid, makaadaw tayo ti sursuro kadagiti duwa nga ehemplo iti ngato ti mannakatulong nga puso. Sapay koma ngarud ta matignay tayo amin nga tumulong ditoy madama nga proyekto tayo.

Tim and Sid, Hello from the Lopezes in Australia!!! We have not seen you for long time either. Yes, Australia is beautiful! The cities are like other cities in the world but the outback and the rural areas have their unique qualities. Come, see and explore it. Your Manang Auring, Mely and Chit live next to each other which makes it convenient for you if you come.

Thanks for for your message complimenting me as the "engine" behind the project. Hard to be humble when you are great, huh! No, the truth is, it's Almighty God under whose sovereign power (He controls everything) He placed us in this circumstance to do His will. We are just the means through whom His purposes are done and our portion is to submit and obey. We are all co-equal workers, but with different roles but nonetheless no one is higher or lesser than the others. Scriptures in 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 tells us an interesting analogy about the different parts of the body. A small and seemingly negligible part like the finger is no less important than the bigger part like the heart for all is part of one body. That's how we should think of ourselves as we all work together for a common purpose. Your call for all to help is very appropriate and, most importantly, for us to pray for God to fill us with "fuel" (wisdom, strength, power, and provisions)for the project. This is what we need to do most. James 4:2b-3 tells us that the reason we don't have is that we don't ask Him. But when we ask and don't receive it's because we ask with wrong motives, meaning for our own honor and pleasure rather than for God. So let us all bear this in mind, TO GOD BE THE GLORY for all the things that He allows us to do. We look forward to Dec 2005 for your expected visit to USA. Hope you consider coming to visit us in California, too.

To our Barriomates: We are lucky to have Manong G as the "engine" powering the project. We should all stay behind him, with financial support whatever amount we can afford, coupled with fervent prayers that the Almighty "Power Source" from above continiously fills the "engine" with empowering "fuel". Manong G: the Lopez clan intends to see the new twin tower site in December 2005. It is not the ideal timing but December is our annual work break in Australia.

It's been over a month since we have this website, but only very few are sending messages through it. I don't know if many are checking on it and learning about developments but just simply not sending any message whatever it is--comments, suggestions, questions, or just simply "kumustahan." Maybe this has not been made known far and wide yet, or no computer or internet access. But if you know and have access, please jot down any message. It's the easiest, fastest and expenseless too. You can also help by letting others know about this website. We like to see messages from you all: those in Hongkong, Singapore, Middle East, Pepito of Italy, Glenn of Taiwan, and also Australia. Let's take advantage of this.

Thank you both for your commitment to the Learning Center Project. It is encouraging that we have the oneness of spirit to help our dear folks back home. By the way, Jesse, you have to excuse me for not knowing you personally. Is your father Manong Missing, or Severo? They have a third brother(think the oldest--forgot his name). Another Malong I know is Alvaro. Where is he now? Regards to all of you.

Thank you for your pledge and message. Your "fish" story is interesting. Roxas and Betty will certainly be pleased with that. By the way Roxas is in RP. I mentioned your message to Betty when I emailed her previously. Why don't we really set your visit to California again? This spring (March through May) is an ideal time. We will get along Flor and Jesse, Merlin and Boy, and the Lopez'es in Australia. What do you say Flor, Merlin, Fernando, Auring, Mely, Conching?

We give thanks and praise first and foremost to our lord and savior Jesus Christ for blessing this project and making all the resources possible!!! As well, we would like to thank the many folks in the region for allowing this opportunity to give back to the community that our father Aquilino F. Ferrer derived from. Additionally, we are grateful to be involved and cannot wait to visit the site that will enable the people of Labuan more opportunity for success via education and other resources. Again, thank you for this opportunity to be included in the project;) Sean and Rhoda Allen

MABUHAY! In behalf of the Teaching Force, Parents, Teachers, and Community Association (PTCA) and the Barangay Council of Labuan, Umingan and Labuan, San Quintin, Pangasinan, we extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for the proposed learning center project you are giving to Labuan Elementary School. The Department of Education implemented the Restructured Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC) which is in the second year of implementation now, which envisions every learner to be functionally literate, equipped with life skills, appreciation of the arts and sports and imbued with the desirable values of a person who is makabayan, makatao, maka-kalikasan at maka-Diyos. In line with this vision, the DepEd, has mission to provide qality basic education that is equitably accessible to all, and to lay the foundation for lifelong learning and service for the common good. This is the Philippine setting. We want very much to meet the call of the Dept, of Education to achieve quality education, but we lack school buildings and facilities like canteen, library, books, computer, etc. However, we are glad and proud to inform you that we are still in the limelight. We won first place in the District FILIPINO LEARNING CENTER EVALUATION and one of the top 3 who represented the 6th Congressional District to the Division Level competition. In the District Quiz Bee (Math, Science, MEKASI) we ranked 2nd place among the 16 participating schools in the district. Motivated by our desire to cope with the needs of the school, we like to solicit your assistance. We appreciate very much your full moral and financial support to our school, and be rest assured that we will utilize your precious support to the fullest extent. We will do our part to contribute to this rewarding goal to help everyone attain lifeling learning for our pupils to become better and responsible person.
