Asingan Message Board From: VIC MessageThe Debbie Reynold's Show was free but even if I paid 100$ for a ticket, it is still worth more than that!.It was like watching her in Vegas in one of those swanky night clubs. She sure was very funny, imitating different old time movie stars, unabashedly telling her past marriage failures and she had her audience in the palm of her hand..She was a super trouper, a stand up comic supreme. Will feature a review of her show in my Blog one of these days after the EX is over. Four more days to enjoy and have fun!...:D From: Zeus MessageWhy there some old song always makes me feel love sick for someone, that doesn't exist my life, lol. Something like classic stunning past moments that I don't understand most of time... I really don't much care for the lyrics, just the main verse and the old rhythm or the beat, it strikes such a strong chord of nostalgia for something I can't quite identify. I asked my wife if she felt the same way and she said "YES!" also, sometimes while listening to the old music got ghost bumps and make my eye lids pops little tears, and my heart feels younger again. For me music is a medicine a some kind of drugs that never exist. From: Alakdan MessageIn the previous posting, Kolohe my kabagian mentioned about a beautiful lass residing nearby the southside of NCS. The old house had a high concrete fence. I have this girl in mind. It could be that she is Ms. Elizabeth Lagunday. Armando, siyempre narigat nga lipaten ti "first love" kuna da. Pero ti importante ket daytoy last love ken madama. From: zeus MessageSome religion and other culture still believe as their rational thoughts lalo yong mga very religious talaga because it was written in the bible or koran na ang babae ay sa bahay lang. Pero as I said from my lasdt posting it is okay. There's culture like the Armenian it is very shameful daw sa pamilya nila kung yong babae ay nagtratrabaho kung minsan isinusumpa nila yong babaeng anak pag nagtrabaho. From: Zeus MessageOne position that women also can do, in the jobs selection women are more advantage than men especially if the interviewer is a guy. he!he!he! that is really true! So, rain is right if that will happen to you/me? tapayaen mo latay itnol paino ag ya maplag. From: Zeus MessageTama ka diyan alakdan it is way of life. That's what women fighting for long time ago lalo dito sa America they said, man can do, woman also can do. If you follow the bible supposedly men be the bread winner and woman will stay home, for me that's an argument. Although, the bible didn't say it is a sin. Thus, in this generation has already been changed and accepted, I will call it evolution the demand of time and survival. As long as women agrees and the theme won't transgress all laws of humanity particularly against god. I think the bible already satisfied of the results. Add the fact that the woman-nurse earns more...ouch sa ego! .... I am in between the Generation X and Generation Y(Millenials), I can say that I am a woman of my own decisions and actions but I also have the values of a Filipina who grew up (22 years) in the Philippines before moving here. I personally value what each (man and woman) can do in the family. Ask me if the man is still the breadwinner? Not necessarily anymore....education and who migrated first plays a big part now if we look at financial value of the modern man and woman. A man who will boast about his experiences about being in the position of "the nurse's neglected husband" so it drove him to do ....."...."....in life is a man who's ego is bigger than life. They fall under the thinking that they failed in their "role". Hindi nila matanggap, hence they try to make sad stories, to get symphaty. And a nurse who will boast about a "tamad" or "Canadian husband" is just the same. Ang nakaraang hostage crisis sa Maynila ay isang ibidensyang totoo tungkol dito. Pero maiba na nga ng topic. Nakita ko ito bilang note na ipinadala ng isa kong kaibigan.. :) .. "it is very evident that most nurses here in USA are married to Canadian........................ oh.....you want Proof?? on their non~busy hours of work they start calling their husbands..... "sweetheart naglaba canadian??" "honey nagluto canadian?" "love naglinis canadian?" oh,man!!! their husbands are all chemist!(umaasa ke misis... :)" From: icarus MessageObtaining a driving license in the Philippines is a joke. To prove the point, a local TV program once documented how a blind man procured a professional driver’s license. With the proper amount and connection, every Tom, Dick and Harry even without going through formal schooling on Vehicle Operation, Traffic Rules and Signs, and Road Courtesy – especially the last two. No wonder, we have chaos in our city streets and open highways because most everyone don’t have the slightest idea on Traffic rules and road courtesy. For example, in city intersections, the sensible rule is to “not enter a junction unless the exit is clear”, even if the traffic lights turn green. In manila, they simply ignore such common-sensical rule and everybody rushes into the intersection once the go light turns on even if they could not get out of it because the street beyond is still full. Their idea is to get there ahead before the traffic in the other direction gets the upperhand! And so, traffic gridlockss of monstrous proportions are a daily occurrence. Well-intentioned re-training and re-orientation seminars are organized every once in a while but these are treated like some money-making scheme by the authorities and shunned by the drivers as some kind of added obstacle. And soon these programs fizzle out in the typical ningas-kugon fashion. Hopeless. Maybe we should raise the qualifying bar for drivers. We may want to require at least a College Diploma or in place of that, a 6 months course that hammers in not only driving skills but more so to make law-abiding, sensible, considerate and courteous drivers. In Dubai, getting a DL is almost like passing through the eye of a needle. You have to undergo 20 hrs of classroom lectures afterwhich you have to pass a written exam before you are qualified for a 20 hrs of actual driving practice. 40 hrs sounds like shortwork but these are spread over 3 months. Only then are you allowed to take the Driving Test. Failing the test is very costly in terms of time and money. You will have to go through the entire process all over again - but only after 30 days. It is not uncommon to hear of people who failed three times or more thus continually going through the process for two years. But the effect on traffic discipline is very apparent. From: VIC MessageMost car drivers in Toronto are very disciplined and courteous. My 3 kids started driving when they are young, thus when they hstarted raising their own families, a car is became a neccesity. But maintaining one in Toronto has now became very expensive what with the prices of insurance and gas going sky high...My elder sister ( and some of my classmates ) have already stopped driving. Here in Toronto, at a certain age, you have to undergo again some kind of "test". The Police seem to want Seniors to get off the streets because 1) they drive too slow, 2) their visions are mostly impaired 3) some may have strokes or heart attacks in front of the steering wheel while on the road plus other issues related to Seniors.. ..:)So we leave it to the younger 'uns..Taxis here in Toronto are very courteous, realiable, and you can phone one 24/7....Traffic cops are also very polite even when they are handing you a speeding ticket. According to my daughter if a cop caught you speeding you should not argue with him. Most of the time, she said, they would hand out lower fines if you are cooperative and smiling....I noticed most people in Asingan are now using scooters or motor bikes. Or bicycles. Many here in Toronto have started using bicyles ( including me ) as an alternative to walking. Bicycles are pretty cheap here especially those in Garage sales every Saturday mornings during spring/summer. One can get a good one for 20$. BUt the law here asks the cyclist to wear a helmet and to drive on the street close to the sidewalk. Only kids are legally allowed on the sidewalk. But these rules are not followed strictly. I still use the sidewalk..:)..Buses lately have installed bike racks in their front fenders for the convenience of cyclists and there are soo many bicycle paths all over the city. Toronto is still a good city to live in.. From: icarus MessageIn the 70’s and the 80’s, owning a car in the Philippines is a privilege enjoyed only by the rich. I was not able to drive my first car until I got a company vehicle as part of my package. It was a double cab pick-up truck but nonetheless I learned from it the joys of driving, especially on long and lazy country drive with my wife and children. Those were the times when I could really talk and bond with my kids which are usually not in talking mode when at home with so much distractions such as TV, Video Games, playmates, work, assignments – name it. Every three years, my company would issue me a new car as a matter of policy so I never get to buy my own. Not until the company closed shop on the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis of ’98 when they let us go and gave us the option of buying the company issued car at book value. Today, it is not easy to move around without your own car. It’s not just a matter of getting used to the convenience but sometimes taking public transport in the Philippines also involves risk – of not getting there on time, of being mugged, etc. Maybe it’s different in Toronto where buses are clean and always on-time and taxi drivers are decent and honest. I had this funny and embarrassing experience while taking a jeepney in Project 3 just two vacations back. I was wearing a light colored polo shirt and sat in front. As a matter of habit, I buckled my seatbelt which they provided just for compliance to law. The driver looked at me like I was some kind of crazy but I just ignored him. When I alighted, I discovered to my horror that my polo shirt was all but sooty and lined black by that seatbelt. That darn driver knew about it but he never told me! It took me another hour to take a taxi to get home and change shirt and almost had a heart attack arguing with taxi drivers who would not bring me back from SM North to Project 3 without a “kontrata” which is what they call the fixed rate arrangement - usually twice the metered rate. These are only some of the hassles. Most of all, I treasure the private space it affords me while commuting from place to place. How could you sing with the radio in a fully-packed bus? How could I blow my nose at will? How could I talk non-sense on the phone with all the passengers eaves-dropping? I could do that all at the same time in the confines of my car. But I am not really sure if all of these things justify the monthly amortization, the maintenance and registration cost, the parking fees, the tool fees and the ever rising cost of gasoline. And don’t forget, owning a car also makes you prey to the kotong cops! Never bought a car ever since I arrived in Canada. It was tough at the outset, but eventually we got used to it since our jobs were in downtown near bus stops. I am now retired. I have a paid up house and financially, we are better than most. I never tasted the joys of driving but right now, we use taxis for grocery shopping, busses for going downtown, etc. etc. We are now even of planning ( not sure yet) of building a small house in Asingan where we can stay half of the year during winter time in Toronto which is quite brutal. Miggie's cousin, a retired surgeon from LA who is now residing in Makati said : " your pension is more than enough to sustain your life here in the Philippines." He is enjoying his retirement in Makati, living in Rockwell. I noticed that more and more expatriate Asinganians are building houses in Asingan. First I made a Mastercopy by copying the movie from a LD player, then I went to my PC and copied the movie as a data..Then I went to this data backing program I have and backed the master copy..Took less than 15 mins. to do it..Then I tested my back up to one of my DVD players..It worked, and the dupe is just as clear as the original in sound and image.Fantastic how movies are now made and distributed now a days..As soon as the 2 other parts, then will send you the whole batch..2 and a half hours of suspense..However, thre is no auto play. One has to press file list on your remote and the 2 existing files will show on the screen. You have to click play on the first one at least manually. But the 2nd file or title will follow automatically...Will -mail you again as soon as I have mailed the package!..Have a grand week end!! From: Zeus MessageThanks Manong Vic, am waiting! Don't mention it Manong, I am here do what I can do help like superman. He!he!he! Listen to this song freakin' crazy it touch me but can't do anything anymore. This song is for those who have first love but didn't go through, the gap has been created then don't know what to do... just only second when the head turned then back realized the gaped is already too big, so many things happened, awakened when is already too late. Now,for me... should I know then? only second because of my emotion but naaah! I won't take it back those days just leave it there, good memories though. he!he! ooops! here the song; My regrets - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFqriwDIi-4&feature=related From: VIC MessageTry Googling A DANGEROUS LIFE..I did it some weeks ago and copies of it are available for 16 $ that's the good news, and the bad news is it is in VHS!..My copy is a Laser Disc bought it long time ago..LD has no copy guard so one can copy directly into a DVD-R Thru a Sony DVD Recorder..I copy 10 min segments from LD to DVD-R thru the DVD Recorder, then upload them into You tube.Very time consuming. The image is kinda crappy in Youtube, but the sound is stereo surround with a stereo PC sound card. The remaining segments are heart pounding because it centered on the election which FM lost but his goons ransacked many precincts..Then Enrile and his other officers decided to separate from Marcos. A mole told Marcos re: the plot, and Marcos mobilized the AFP. FM ordered some Battalions to surround Malacaniang and the rest would go to attack Enrile and his men. When Enrile learned that Marcos discovered their plot, he asked his friends to get all ammo they can carry, bring it all to Fort Aguinaldo to make a last stand. He also phoned FRamos if he is with him. Ramos said YES. Enrile phoned Cory too, but Cory said "I can only pray for you"..When she put down the phone, she said to someone beside her."Enrile was Ninoy's jailer. Each time I visit my husband, I always go through him. Now he is asking me for my help.." But the real help came from Cardinal Sin. Before he issued the appeal to the people ( that crystallized the masses into People Power ), he said to one priest," If I will ask the people to surround Fort Aguinaldo, they will follow me. But that will be inviting them to their death because I am sure the soldiers under Ver will fire on the crowds to disperse them. When I go to meet my Maker the blood of my people will be on me." The priest answered back.." If you do not give the command for the people to go to Ft. Aguinaldo, what do you think will your Maker will say to you ..?" It was really a tough decision..I am telling th basic story now but watching how the movie narrated those crucial events is different because the movie Director sustained the tension in suspenseful bits and pieces until the last scene when Malacaniang fell into the hands of the crowd. Watching the movie 's climax puts you right in there with the crowd who risked their lives. They had nothing but rosaries and clasped hands to fight the guns of the tanks.. The movie, by the way, ended with the speech given by the real Mrs. Cory Aquino to the USCongress during her Presidency.. From: Zeus MessageJust write I read it all! Manong Vic where did you buy the CD, I want to watch it again with my wife and with beer in my hand, he!he! From: Jehan MessagePrincessa, Uncle Vic is right, start another thread....or keep writing about love stories and life experiences like before....I read those things you see?...lol they remind me of the times when I was a sensitive, lovestruck adolescent, sentimental din ako...but I don't have time to write nor spend time day dreaming about the past....life is busy here in Canada... so keep posting/writing.... :) From: Jehan MessageIt has indeed become everywhere....the "major, major" answer of Miss Philippines, Venus Raj. Watching Miss Raj's interview on GMA today....she really asserted herself, maybe she really has not done anything that she needed to make right. People are congratulating her and for sure back home they are so happy and proud of her... she's 4th runner up of how many candidates....that says a lot. But really, there is something beneath the question that should draw the kind of answer it deserves. If anyone remembers the Miss Universe (held in the Philippines)Shusmita Shen (spell check pls.)....the question was "what is the essence of a true woman?".....if I am not mistaken it was the same question asked amongst all the top candidates...including Miss Charleen Gonzales, Michelle Van Eimereen (former Mrs Ogie Alcacid). Miss Shen's(India) answer wan not only worded right, the meaning/content was right, it was delivered with grace and confidence of a real woman, a Miss Universe, and the most important thing, it appealed to the audience and judges better than the others for sure. My say?...I am proud of Miss Raj for her efforts and accomplishment. But I hope it is a learning curve for all that we could develop ourselves more in areas that we are not so good at...it will take us to better places in life. And it starts with recognizing that we are not perfect, amen. From: A reader MessageI agree with you that simple questions should not be answered in simple terms. The answers should be deeper than the surface, to impress to the interviewer that the interviewee has big horizon. I think her manager or consultants did not prepare her for the big time event. From: VIC MessageYou can always start another thread..there is no rule a single one should dominate. Variety is the spice of life..By the way, for those following up A DANGEROUS LIFE, if you want a complete copy of the 160 minute movie burned on DVD-R, just e-mail me. You can watch the whole show in your big screen TV, in surround sound in one sitting. It will be recorded in HQ for highest possible quality in image and sound. Of course you have to spend for the mailing and some charges.. :D...Then I do not have to upload the remaining parts, which is quite a big pain in the ass..ha-ha!..Anyways, have a nice day folks! The weather is good today in Toronto..Nice to visit the EX again...:D From: VIC MessageIn episode 8, Ben the newspaper publisher was summoed by Marcos to Malacaniang..Marcos asked him if he learned about the NY newspaper's story re: his fake war record. And he asked Ben never to publish it just in case the story will arrive via news wires..Marcos even dangled a carrot in front of Ben: a Consul's position in San Francisco, in case he cooperates. Ben said " I do not have that much money to be a Consul.." "Money is no problem," said Marcos...According to the story line in the movie, the story re: the fake medals was the turning point of the election. This is a well known aspect of that fateful election..When 2 Presidents were inaugurated one after the other. This episode was not in the movie, but it was broadcasted on world wide television at that time. The remaining episodes are filled with brutality and mayhem. Some real TV clips were incorporated into it ( stealing of ballot boxes ). Reagan was also mentioned in there because inspite of the blatant fixing of election results, he was still in favour of Marcos remaining as the President of the Philippines. Marcos has a very strong political machinery very much in control of the Phil. For the sake of the US bases in our country. They say that history is the better judge of person or persons..Decades later ( today ) we can not help but wonder.."What if?..." From: Princesa MessageHindi ko akalaing ang hostaging ni Mendoza pala ang pipigil sa madaldal kong daliri... wala na akong masabi... From: Zeus MessageSomeone e-mailed me about the SAR. Well, I used that technique to any job interview and it works perfectly "walang sablay" when you get used to it everything is gonna be smooth and the play of the interview will instinctively turned around on you to control everything not the interviewer anymore. I also implemented from my new job to the interview panel and it works and they like it, easy to choose the right candidate. Any interview questions it works but you need constant practice and help from someone to simulate the interview's action. I have more than 100 questions here that usually use by the Manager's interviewers, thus there's no exact answers only explanation how will you answer, for sure in your own instinct. From: Zeus MessageNow Iknow, why the type of questions is just like the interviewer... Donald trump was there, is he the chairman of the board? I don't know but what I doknow he was running the show. From: Zeus MessageI have good answer from the Miss Universe Question for the Philippines. I think mostly know answer especially for those job hunters. That is already a monotonous question from the interviewers, I guess! I will use the technique on how to react of those kind of interview, called it (S.A.R) Situation Action and Result. Here the question, "What is one big mistake that you made it in your life and what did you do to make it right?" the question is simple and not tricky. Explain the SITUATION of mistakes you have done e.g. - From friend's party, I farted in front of my friends because I can't resist eating burrito that I know the beans is bad for my stomach but I eat anyway. ACTION on how to correct the mistakes - From now on I corrected myself not to eat burrito or with beans anymore if there's a party. Result from the action - from that embarrassing moment I learned on how to discipline my self and resist the temptation, I think of what I have done is also good for my health. This answer is just for fun for those who loves burrito like the winner, lol. By the way, the question was selected for her, and seems the Questions is about her birth certificate even caused her to briefly lose her Miss Philippines crown, they want HEAR from what was happened maybe. We all know, It hasn't been easy for anybody but she dropped the ball. She could have been reinvented those small mistakes she had and make it big mistakes, somehow it is apprehended that is small thing, not totally said, never had mistakes "...22 years in existence I can say there's nothing major, major... I mean problem that I have done in my life". She dropped the ball there... Miss universe title is gone! From: VIC MessageJehan, every nation has its own boo-boos, some worse than others..I am sure there are countries in deeper crap than us..:D..Thanks Zeus for the info, I am sure many others who are fond of tinkering with their PCs instead of going to sleep are benefiting from your short chats...Segments 7 & 8 are already in youtube. Watching the episodes give me the goose pimples because at that time, we in Toronto were wondering what was happening in the Philippines. I never went home during the Martial Law. People were just accosted on the streets by "special agents". I can never get over that experience when one time, on my way back to Laguna ( I was still in our country then ), I was approached by one "agent", with a car, and asking me to go with him because of security measures connected with the Martial Law. I do not know whether he was an agent or ust a plain burglar. He was inviting me to his car so we can go to "somewhere". I complained, and told him I am on my way to work. Told him too I also work for the government. Which was true. Fortunately, he let me go without much ado. Scary s...t, it was during those days. No writ of habeas corpus. Marcos was the supremo. The number one. We thought he would never leave and the Philippines would be ruled by his dynasty forever. Dark days those were. From: VIC Messagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5_WPUb_0tE From: Zeus MessageSome of the theory of a controversial decision on affirmative action by the authority. The hostage taker is ex-Manila policemen,he demanded negotiation with the media through his brother in the scene, when his brother told that in the media the authority "DINAMPOT siya" at kinasuhan na siya ay one of the crime instrument. The bus has TV and on, after he found out that his brother was taken by the authority "nagwala siya." Actually the motive of the this ex-policeman was to speak out of what he know from the department. Nakasuan daw siya sa Drugs related na hindi naman niya ginawa. Kaya ganoon ang nagyari sa crime scene ay gusto talagang iligpit itong hostage taker para hindi maka-karaoeki, ha1ha!ha! I think this case is very sensitive under conspiracy. P-noy the President should not taken any affirmative action, we all know our President is straight and he want to solve this issue, pero ang kalaban ay medyo mabibigat mga officials baka assassination ang abot niya. From: VIC Messagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrpmvJvCPhU From: VIC MessageI believe our policemen do not have that kind of training in handling special situations. They resort to barbaric methods ( like manhandling the relatives ) in order to force the hostage taker to give up..I do not know if the Philippines has a Police Academy. One has to be careful in talking with Policemen inside their offices. Sometimes they become arrogant and would try to cut you down to size. But if the Chief of Police is your kumpare, then it is a different story..:) From: VIC MessageWe were able to loiter only inside the international building yesterday, because that is where Miggie and my sis wanted to be: to check the new jewelries exhibited by Asian ( Philippines included )exhibitors...So far, this is the most visited building in the Ex. Something new this year is sand sculpting by different artists. There are sand sculptures exhibiting mermaids, rock stars, etc. and on certain times, the artists themselves would work with their sculptures so spectators could watch how they do it..Seems sand sculting is quite easy to do, just like building sand castles on the beaches of Lingayen or Bonuan...Then there are the booths of different nations: Russia, Egypt, China, Thailand, etc. Thailand have many wood carvings: horses, warriors, ( the expensive line ) or the froggies, which make a croaking sound when you pass a stick over their ribbed backs. These are the cheapos...Then there is the dog show. I think my dog Sparky could run as fast the stars in there..The show is held inside an auditorium complete with lights and powerful sound systems...Then there are the gallery of clothes: jeans, jackets, shoes, bags, that would really drain your wallet if your sales resistance is low ( or your kids are with you )..In the middle of this INTERNATIONAL MARKET is a stage where special shows ( dances and stuff ) are shown. One year, bamboo orchestra from the Philippines was featured. Yesterday a group of Chinese acrobats showed their skills. They are young women gifted with these skills comparable to what is shown in Vegas..They make human pyramids while thier bodies are bent backwards. I think those guys have vulcanized rubber instead of bones...In one instance, an artificial tree was placed on the stage. Three acrobats went on top of one another. Then each one bit a branch of that tree and placed her legs on a branch..Soon all three were independent of each other, ( never touching each other ) Each one was holding a separate branch, while biting it, then her legs are resting on another branch on top of the branch being bitten..Cool!..Anyways, I will show you a video next time..I did not bring my camera yesterday.. From: Alakdan MessageIcarus, you are right. The unfortunate and dreadful hostage taking incidents is not what out country needs right now. Not only the backlash that our OFW's in Honkong could be facing but also to our failing economy particulary the tourism industry. I would say, the media should have responsibility too aside from informing the public. I was watching the live coverage in GMA 7 particularly that of Mike Enriquez, et al and i was really aghast and disgusted how they would report every details even sensitive information as if acting as the third eye of the hostage taker in the outside world. Mike would narrate in details, the position of the SWAT snipers, the numbers of police cars inching their way near the bus and how the swat members hiding on the side of the cars. They would even prematurely announce that the brother was arrested while in fact it is not. Some other informations and footages were shown live that surely agitated the hostage taker. I think in this volatile situation, responsible journalism and self-sensorhip should prevail over factual reporting that would result to high traffic of viewership. Anyways, they have ample time to air these footages afterwards when the situation calm down. Lives of people are most direly important that TV station's high rating. The caffeine is working it's wonders, but....Hayyy...the call of childhood, perya kasi!...lol From: Jehan MessageI admire your statement "It's a world class incompetence". I said "either awan ti usto nga hostage-taking protocol/training da or there's another angle.....as to why kabaro nilang pulis ganon ginawa nila". I don't know the real facts, and maybe the real thing may never be known....but I agree that there could have been a better way of handling the situation. From: VIC MessageSCENES FROM THE EX no. 1..Again, I jumped into the "rabbit hole" and found myself in a Wonderland whose sights and sounds never cease to amaze!..One of my favortie spots is the exhibit that says"All Books 3 for 10$!!..One can always check the cover prices of the goodies: a volume of ART FROM SPIDER MAN 3, a thick book full of sketches, drawings and photos from the movie is among the loot..Cover price is 50.00..Art books since these are printed on glossy book paper to be able to give the best reproduction, are really expensive. "How to " books are all over..I picked up one called RESTORING OLD FURNITURE, shows in pictures and text, how to restore the old antiques ( we have lots of stuff like this in Asingan )by means of varnishes, shellacs, sandpaper, and certain proven techniques..Then there is a big surplus of photography books showing photos from the earth as well as from outer space..Books, especially at these prices, are much much better investments than many other commodities ( like DVDs ) because books last with good handling, you do not need batteries/juice to read them and somehow, they provide you with that continuing adult education even if you are already out of the classroom..Next time I visit the Ex which will end Labour Day, I will bring a dolly and several boxes...:) From: icarus MessageWe again grabbed the headlines today but for all the wrong reasons. How a disgruntled ex-policeman's gripes and seeking of attention could escalate into such an ugly bloodbath? How could professionals bungle and mishandle such a critical situation. The drama is actually subsiding and is on its way to a peaceful ending except that some poor decisions in the end stretch angered the hostage taker and made him more desperate. Why would the police, supposedly one of the pillars of fair play and justice, arrest and manhandle his kins in full view of world TV which is also being monitored by the suspect? And why are there cameras and kibitzers in the first place? Are they not supposed to cordon off the area? They can do that to folks and activist who have ligitimate causes, why couldnt thay have done the same here where real lives in real time are at stake. It's world class incompetence, in full display. Of course there will be backlash from the international community. Our OFWs in Hongkong will bear the brunt of backtalk, hard stares maybe even physical harm. But maybe there is a way to appease the Chinese people. We can offer them that drug-dealing Congressman in exchange. And let them have their way on him...At least mabura man lang ang isa sa mga blackeye natin. From: VIC MessageOff to the Canadian National Exhibition we go. It's the farewell to Summer event here in Toronto..This unforgettable fair ends on labour Day and then it is back to school for the kids. Unlike in the Phil. school here starts September...Photos of the exhibits might appear in my blog within the next few days. It is the equivalent of the Asingan Town Fiesta, only this one is in a larger scale..But one can not help but to be a kid again once you enter the CNE portals!!...See ya at the EX!!! From: VIC Messagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX8cPVU5opo From: VIC MessageThe next episode ( which I am already uploading; hope there won't be any glitch ) shows a fictional account of the battle of Mendiola bridge..In this segment, the wife of Tony decided to visit him in Manila, not knowing he has a girl friend (Dina Bonnave )..Then the girl friend went to see her brother in the march along Mendiola which became a free for all when some soldiers started firing at the demonstrators..This video ( 2 and a half hours long ) is very timely now because Noynoy at last became the new President, a position his dad wanted before but unfortunately it flew out of his grasp... They do not look like Julia Roberts so, so I said PASS(!).."What if they look like Julia Roberts: you may ask"..I would answer: "I do not know what would happen!.." JUST KIDDING..:D.. There is a certain phenomenon in cyber chatting that you get attracted to your chatmate..You do not see her at first and you visualize her to be pretty, sexy, due to your sense of imagination..So you slowly fall into a kind of web and before you know it, you are in "love" ..Believe me, it happened to me several times.Only when I see their real photo that the bubble bursts. In some cases, some male pranksters pretend to be women when chatting with you..:D... It is an phenomenon of the Cyber age. Spouses looking for kicks would entice cyber partners. There were a few cases when a pervert would set a date time&place with a very susceptible "prey".LONELY HEARTS, e.g. .Thus, some victims are seduced in person..Some were released after ( these are the lucky ones ) and some were murdered then buried somewhere..Thus these once living persons become statistics in the Missing persons bureau..Guard your teen agers..Take note of whom they are chatting with in the web. Hindi lang yon, nagkaroon din ako ng isang kaibigan for two years at nagpromise din na darating sya sa Pilipinas pero ang nangyari, he went somewhere else at ng bumalik sya sa bansa nila, isang email na lang ang natanggap ko which said " I am sorry, I am just another asshole and I cannot just ruin the spirit in you.. " LOL.. nilagay pa ako sa pedestal at least..kasi nawili sya sa isang caddie sa Pampangga at wala...I found out na may sakit naman pala yon sa utak. No, this is not sourgraping.. but this is true. Sometimes when we think we lose.. it is not really that. hindi ko kailangan ng mga kumikinang tropeo para ipakita na panalo ako. Kailangan ko lang maramdaman na sa kalooban ko meron akong dangal at nahaharap ko ang sarili ko at nakakausap ito nang tapat, saan man ako at sa ano mang sitwasyon ako masangkot.. :) From: VIC MessageThe clip below is just 10 mins, the amount of time allowed by Youtube for each upload..I will try to reproduce the whole work, if possible.. When I was young and idealistic, I was scandalized with this movie. But now, I do not give a crap anymore, because I have seen it all, been there, done that..etc..Each movie for me leaves a lesson in life. Thorn Birds somehow teaches me that the libido dominates whether you like it or not, whether you are a priest or not..This is just what I think I learned from the movie, I might be wrong..In THE CARDINAL, the priest fell in love with a pretty woman during his period of vacation away from the seminary ( 1 year ) to determine whether he really likes priesthood. He met this gorl, did not tell her he is a seminarian on his last year, then when his vacation is about to end ( and the woman was bugging him for them to hit the sack ) he told her he is about to make his final vows..The woman felt screwed, but not in the way she wanted..:D..Anyways, he met her again at the end of the movie, she was in prison because it was the regime of 3rd Reich and all liberal minded Germans were clapped into jails..She confessed she still love him.How romantic can it be?..Maybe the priest who saw you have seen these movies too..Joking aside, Love can bring you to heaven or can bring you to hell...again, do not quote me on this, I also heard it in another movie, just can not remember the title anymore..:) From: Princessa MessageThanks for your comment VIC. Uhuh? Love is only for the young? What if I get 60 also? I won't be in love anymore? I cannot imagine how it will be then...how could I write then? LOL.. Yes the story was interesting and perhaps the reason why he taught me of the internet was because he wanted to somehow pay his mistake. He posted in one of the links he had a posted with the bold word; MEA CULPA (is my spelling right?) we learn to forgive and see the positive side of everything. I learned of the Internet because of him.. I started to believe in my talent as a writer because of the writing challenges he gave me in those times.. and the hurt he gave made me poured out all that was inside me, and I let it all out like words just flow and flow to no end...at napakinabangan na nga.. :).. LOL..ahhh it takes some failures for us to know that some strenghts are hidden..just waiting for a chance.. :) From: alakdan MessageThat was an interesting story. From: VIC MessageYour story is interesting, Princess..Love I guess for the young, not for the 60+ generation, ...:D..Well back to movies...I found a complete copy of A DANGEROUS LIFE. It is a made for TV produced in Australia, and it is a fictitious account of the last days of the Martial Law era in our country..I will soon be featuring the opening scenes, as much as what YouTube can allow...The movie incorporates live TV shots of that exciting days in our country when one could not tell what will happen next, and how People Power took over the helm of steering the country's destiny. Remember, this is just a fictitious account, an exercise in movie making..It might stir some old sentiments about those days in 1986..The opening scene shows the last interview of Ninoy, a fictional clip of his assasination, etc. Many of the clips were real. The story revolves on an American reporter played by Gary Busey who visited Manila on an assignment on that day Aquino arrived and met his fate at the MIA ( now named after him ) tarmac... From: Princessa MessageThanks for the reaction. How I wish I react also with other topics but it seems I am not really very acquainted with Asingan and although I had been to Pangasinan in the early 90's.. that was too long ago already. Love is the topic most easy to react...lol.. though I had been unfortunate with it; I am still a very loving and gentle person although there are people who say I am annoying also.. :) I can remember an experience before I learned of the Internet in 2004. I happened to read a newspaper with an advertisement on "WANTED TEXTMATE" I got interested with a numberand texted it and presto! I got a very interesting and intelligent textmate. Wow, the texting relationship went through and that was fun. This textmate of mine asked me for a meeting in a mall and I went. Funny, he was clever and I never saw him but he saw me. He made explanation thru text why it happened and I was forgiving so the texting went on and on even until more than a year.. with the promise that one day we will see each other. This textmate of mine brought me to the Internet.. taught me how to do it.. familiarized me of websites.. etc etc.. and encouraged me to write. This was the beginning of my real career in writing.. but as I was enhancing my talent, I felt that this text friend of mine was trying to disappear little by little until he was gone. Goshh.. I began to look for him through the websites he created for me that time and through all the links there.. and the links pointed me to one direction.. that was to one of the UNIVERSITies here in our city. My search was not in vain. I found him... HE WAS a priest, a VP of Student Affairs. Siggghhhh... LOL.. :) From: Mr Pogi MessageSounds like an interesting movie to watch Manong!!!i'll give it a chance and then i will give you my review ratings lol!!!! From: VIC Messagehttp://timelessmovieclassics.blogspot.com/2010/08/when-i-saw-single-man-other-night-on.html From: Princessa MessageI never knew I had the talent in writing, but when I was still young, I would always go walking along the seashore and amuse myself of the sunset, the wind, the horizon.. the waves. In college, I wasn't like most girls, probably because I felt a bit inferior since I came from a poor family in a fishing village and have no parents since they died young. I used to doodle.. then stories came to my head wherever I was, like I was watching a movie all by myself but I never wrote them. Ahhh.. they say that writers and poets like me are so passionate.. and love is just a topic that never runs out of intrigues.. and it makes me write, it makes me live for I earn a living at least out of this writing aside from school (being a teacher). God is so kind. There are people who sometimes say I am unfortunate in love but those who say that I guess lack the understanding. For in myself, love never fails to give me hope, to give me strenght though sometimes I have to pay for it with some tears... LOL.." masarap pa rin.. parang sweet n sour" From: Princessa MessageI was smiling.. From: icarus MessageWas it Blaise Pascal, a very logical man of Math and Science who said, "Love has reasons which reason does not understand"? We don’t rationalize love. Never. It’s an affliction with no known cause or surefire cure. I mean, we all have this idea of an ideal person whom we look for and fantasize about. And then one day someone, as stupid as we are, walks in and just as much as asks for directions - and whammm! Suddenly, stupid us can’t forget that smile or that baritone voice! Just as suddenly, we revise our view of our ideal partner. To fit this stupid newcomer. Hahaha. There is no use to explain or to justify because no one can. I mean, no one. LOL.. but in person I am one very gentle soul who loves to listen rather than talk.. and who thinks a lot and if you know my own dialect, I can play with words which make my friends laugh ... This is life.. Someone says we have to love with out condition and reasons but we really just ca't please the world. If one loves with out reasons, the world will call him/her a fool but if one loves with reason, he/she then becomes a hooker.. LOL.. Thanks really for the song.. I appreciate it. From: icarus MessageSo true, Princess. I couldnt help but agree with your random thoughts. Love is really the most wonderful gift a person can give to another, and it doesn’t have to be reciprocated to be fulfilled. But if it is, consider it as just a wonderful bonus! Some things are really not meant to be. We win some, we lost some but so what…nobody wins all the time! We lick our wounds and allow ourselves ample time for mourning… then we move on. In this universe of infinite randomness, chances are we will stumble on somebody yet again and maybe even more deserving. I wish I have yours and Rain’s level of sensitivity to be able to set the same thoughts in poetry, but unfortunately, it’s not my strongest area…er.. not my area, period. Yet, beautiful expressions don’t have to be original either. So this, if you allow me, is the most poignant song I know of for loving and losing. <<< http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNLYTY2G1sw >>> From: VIC Messagehttp://timelessmovieclassics.blogspot.com/2010/08/i-found-that-movie-is-already-in-market.html From: VIC Messagehttp://timelessmovieclassics.blogspot.com/2010/08/one-night-in-staisabel.html From: Rain Messageit's so nice to have true friends around even though i haven't met but the feeling is a dynamite whewww!!!Zeus salamat ed sika inar-aro ta ka insan....off to work now be back at 4 :)). I believe the action was supposed to be in Leyte, where Gen. McArthur supposed to land but some bombing scenes were shot in Lingayen Gulf. Then there was an inserted clip showing Gen. Douglas McArthur greeting the jubilant Filipino crowds upon his landing in Leyte. He might be a look alike. I think the book must be better than the movie, as in most cases. I saw it for the first time in Dagupan theater and then in the Elite theatre in Urdaneta. Lately, I see many movies of Tyrone Power on DVD Box collections. His early swashbuckling movies are there, but not AMERICAN GUERILLA IN THE PHILIPPINES... From: asat Messagemore power From: A G MessageVic, were you referring to the movie, “ American Guerilla in the Philippines” wherein Tyrone Power was the star? It is based on the exploits of Lt. Edwin Ramsey, who joined the Filipino resistance against the Japanese Imperial Army and rose to command the guerilla movement. I happened to read the boat about his war adventures. From: VIC Messagehttp://timelessmovieclassics.blogspot.com/2010/08/some-classic-movie-themes.html From: VIC MessageA classic movie in the '50s was EDDIE DUCHIN STORY which featured Tyrone Power and Kim Novak..The names ring a bell?..I do not blame you if it does not, not unless you were born '40s or earlier..:) The movie's theme music is TO LOVE AGAIN..For trivia's sake Tyrone Power came to the Philippines in the 50s to be in a movie which until now I consider the best movie about the WW II in our country..As you know, most movies about the war esp. Tagalog and Hollywood ones are so crappy..But this glossy production which starred big names from Hollywood and Manila was a money maker. Too bad the DVD is not yet aailable and it is now seldom shown on TV..But anyway, Tyrone also showed his drama talent in playing the pianist Eddie Duchin. The piano soundtrack was recorded by Carmen Cavallaro ( who by the way is a man )...When the movie EDDIE DUCHIN STORY made money in the box office, music producers milked further the cash cow and recorded TO LOVE AGAIN featuring the harmonic styling of the Four Aces. But if you want to know the actual classical piece title, it is Chopins Nocturne in Eb..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_cWXq8scHo From: Princessa MessageUnconditionally: We love without condition because we feel the same love even it is not returned. Yesterday, I was at the HMV checking movie titles..Blu Ray discs are now 2 for 20 $, except for the new releases..I resolved not to buy extensively these BD because, 1) there is no more space in my house for technological "junk". 2) no more DVDs either because I can borrow all the new ones from the Toronto Library.3) But I might break my resolution when the new 3-D TVs and discs come out..A neighbour of ours who works for a film production company in Toronto said many film companies have invested much for 3-D processing film equipment and he hope this fad will stay on long enough for them to recover what they spent on these new things...This next trivia covers early 3-D in the Philippines. I saw my first 3-D in the Binalonan Theater in the '50s..It was a short one and we had to return the 2 colored 3-D glasses to the lobby as we go out of the theater. Without the glasses, one sees two images of the same picture: 1 red and one blue. To be more precise, 1 magenta and 1 cyan..Shortly after, a new method came out ( polarized lenses ). No more blue and red glasses. The lenses are more like grayish. The fad did not last long. BWANA DEVIL is one very popular title of a 3-D film that made movie goers go ga-ga in those days. But I think this is the same technology they are using for the current 3 D films. 3-D production became cheaper mainly because of computers. In fact film production is getting to be an obsolete word because not many use film anymore for movies or still shots!. My friend who works in the film lab said, they are now using mostly digital shots ( humungous files ) and they make use of huge monitors costing 40,000+ $ just to check the color of their products as they go from one duplicating step to the other. For as we know, making movies takes countless steps from the time all scenes are shot, to the editing room, and up to production of film copies to be distributed in different countries. Anybody who took shots with a vidcam, edit it on a Windows Movie Maker ( titling, fade ins, fade outs , etc ) and upload it to Youtube will have a taste of how intricate ( and exciting ) movie making is. I can never get enough of movies, especially the classics...:) From: VIC MessageHAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!....:X From: sonny MessageMaligayang kaarawan, kaibigan. All the best! From: icarus MessageMng. Vic, Those articles are the last struggle in a losing war by the crt. while the crt may have better picture quality in smaller models, their pixel distribution becomes very grainy in larger models. and since, the rays imminate from one end of the tube, they tend to have square, even roundish screen - which seem to go against the current (and better) trend of flat tv's wide screen format and thus finally reconciling the aspect ratio of TV and Cinema. Power consumption and heat generation are also big issues going against the crt. And of course the issue of weight and space. True, the early plasmas and LCDs are a bit dimmer and with lower contrast ratios (almost like projection TVs) but you can hardly say that with the latest versions especially the backlit LED's. we can say that this is the dawn for flats and the dusk for crts. A few romantics like us will still cling to the old stuff but eventually they will be replaced by something better. The evolution much similar to what happened between the vinyl record and the audio tape, the film camera and the digital camera, the horse carriage and the steam carriage... the list could go on and on. From: VIC MessageFrom an article:.." Yet more than 90 million CRTs were sold last year, says an MIT report--almost all of them to Asia and Latin America. Why? Because they are both durable and cheap, and--guess what?--they still offer higher-quality pictures than LCDs and plasma sets, .." Last night I compared my 12 " CTR TV and a 32 LCD, I played a DVD and the image appeared on both sets at the same time..Reuslt?..The image in the LCD is crappy compared to the image in the CTR TV.The white is whiter and the black is blacker in the CRT TV..Seems we have been had again when it comes to technology by the TV salespeople.. Be careful downloading e.g. plugin, adobe reader etc. these software are created equal but not from web site where you downloaded, usually the free download software are belong to the 3rd party web sites. If you are directed to the unknown website you have to stop and find again until found the right company. They will gather at Fremont California's picturesque Central Lake Elizabeth Park.Merced resident,Ben Peralta,AANCI president urged members to attend this important event. He encouraged members to come prepared with their slate of candidates for the various positions at stake in the election.the AANCI was formed in 1989 as an outlet for socialization among its members and as a conduit for humanitarian aid to their indigent former town mates in Asingan, Pangasinan. Its major projects have been the construction of an annex to the town's Puericulture Center and a dental clinic set up inside. .......Its current officers are:Ben Peralta, president,,Rosa Valdez Santos, executive vice president.Area presidents include Nita BautistaDivina,Cely Dorado,JosieM. Tiongson, Letty Malalang-Romero and Zenaida Guerrero. .......Hope you are acquinted and familiar with these Asinganians Manong Vic and the way they look in the pictures were they seem to be 69ers already...hahahhhhh!!! ######### Many of the names ( esp. the family names ) are familiar to me...My classmates in the elementary years were some of them.. another e-mail worthwhile sharing...I read on AMB that you're forming an Asinganian club in Toronto. That's great! I helped formalize our by-laws and constitution for our Asinganian club on #### I had saved on a very old diskette. I'll see if I can dig it out and I'll send it to you for example. Basically, what we did is we charged $20 for annual membership fees; senior citizens are free. If there's a death in the immediate (wife, husband, daughter or son), there would be a mandatory donation (I know it's no longer a donation if it's mandatory). The monies collected would then be given to the bereaved family. We have a month meeting and it's different house all the time and it's potluck. Our officers have a year term so that it's not always the same people. We have fund raising to raise funds for scholarship on ####. We also had a fund raising to construct a "comfort room" somewhere at the Asingan plaza - on the side somewhere. Our club raised enough funds to bring former mayor Lopez (twice) for our induction of officers. The following year we also brought over former mayor Guillermo Piso. It's fun to get together with people from the same town. The meeting alone is a great place to reconnect with friends. I was the secretary....To all Asinganians in Toronto, let us have another potluck get together..What do you say, Albert?.. From: VIC MessageAn exciting application mentioned to me by my daughter just a while ago is the Guttenberg (named after the inventor of the Printing Press ) With this app in your iPad, you can download complete books and it will save you paper and $$ buying..As we chat, many titles are being scanned to be downloaded by Ipad users..These will be a good substitute someday for printed books..Can Windows do this? From: Sidney Soberano MessageI am ready to meet both of you comes September 14th-16th 2010 at Kensington Hilton. Please keep me update if there will be some changes on your skeds. If you cannot endure the pain, the decision is entirely up to you to have a back surgery, but I am telling you NOW that it will just make you to be in hell. Well, go to www.connectionnewspapers.com and click on PRINT EDITION and CENTRE VIEW SOUTH to see my ads. Because of the ads, people with chronic pain problems around Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C. and Virginia will probably keep me busy till the end of time. LOL. The results of this will determine if I need to advertise to The Washington Post, a national newspaper.I do suggest to mark your calendar. Thanks. Sidney From: VIC MessageWe need other feedbacks too from those who have experienced using IPads already..Pros and Cons are always needed in debates or discussions as long as no heated tirades are used..You know what I mean..Before we get too serious, here is one joke in Pilipino to lighten up the atmosphere...Sabi ng Teacher: " Juan, ano ang masasabi mo sa salawikaing Tagalog na ito: AANHIN MO ANG PA ANG DAMO KUNG PATAY NA ANG KABAYO?" Sagot ni Juan:"Eh Ma'am, di ipakain sa baka!"...:D From: VIC MessageNo harm done, Zeus!..Actually, I still have my Compaq Laptop - XP..I just can not make the WI-FI work..I tried going to the Control Panel, tried removing the X, but it gave me the message "go to your administrator.." I am my own administrator and I do not know what the hell its talking about..The original disks are gone. The cost of having it fixed at Staples ia about 150 $..But, I am not really excited re: the IPad..But many people are buying it, making Apple one very "solvent" company..Its stocks must be going up already... From: Zeus MessageNow, I got it! I opened this conversation about I-pad here at work. I asked my co-workers what is inside the I-pad Vs. regular computers. One guy brought in his I-pad from his car and said, I regretted buying this crap (I-pad) I am sorry I just telling the real what happening right now. So, we discussed and it came out that laptop and notebook is still better in any ways of operations and concepts against I-pad. manong vic and Icarus sorry you got hooked to the practically hype of the new gadget. Icarus I understand you showed much love to your kids, and thus you make it them happy I'll do that also to my children. Kids goes to the style even though how much it cost. To Manong Vic, don't get mad at me we are friend, he!he!he! you got hooked! Laptops, notebooks still the hi-tech and advance Technology than I-PAD. From: bugs Messagemetoo, I stick to my Dell XPS 420, 3xHD, 3xCD/DVD writers, 22" monitor, 2.1 speaker system and 2xprinter connected to it. The good thing is, I can upgrade and repair it myself. iPad has no use for me so with the classy iphone. I still got an old reliable Nokia N80 phone in Pay as you Go. I only use £20 a year load. I only use it in emergency or I am out. mainly for texting. If I phone someone I use the home phone. That's it! My PC, is my workhorse and second wife hahahaha. From: zeus Messagesorry 4 da typos, guess - guest he!he! From: Zeus MessageThat is why since technology keep upgrading it is my principle not rushing to buy new conception of gadgets, I always at the back of maybe number 1 million people already enjoying their own. Maybe I got influenced by the people around me who are the real hobbyist. Because for instance what would be the difference of the new I-pad device compare with the home and office computer? I think their differences is the I-pad is mobilize, small, an thus still the same with the laptop, I guest! The fact is I never touch any of this new gadget so tell me what are the differences from conventional conmputer. I heard this I-pad has a lot of glitches that still does the brainstorming from the apple company, good luck to them because Motorola, DROID, ANDROID and HTC/goggle are coming to get them. Motorola and Droid are getting better than anybody particularly Motorola the real Company for the technology also they are ready for the 4G in IP mobile or IP Phone. Japan Operating System are talking to Motorola if that will happen it is gonna be a win situation either side. From: VIC Message"which you could many kids "..."which you could plug many kinds .." From: VIC MessageWhen I was in Florida, I had the chance to play with my daughter's I pad. I kinda liked it because it is very user-friendly..It has a single port ( I think ) to which you could many kids of peripherals ( which you have to buy from Apple, of course ) and whatever the PC Laptop can do, the Ipad can do too through the peripherals. It is very light, the battery lasts for a long time, and there is no overheating..In principle, it looks like a enlarged i phone, only you do not have any to pay monthly charges. You pay only monthly IP charges. It needs a router, and if you are in certain places ( like airports, certain coffee shops, etc ) just pull it out and play. The keyboard appears on the monitor when you tell the thing you want to type something. You do not tell it vocally, just touch a button on the screen. Everything is touch system. You can scroll down by dragging your finger up and down or left and right on the thick monitor screen..My assesment of it?..It is worth getting just for the convenience and ease of use. If I were you, I won't buy it in the UAE..Just ask someone from the US or Canada to buy it for your son and you can just square it with the buyer as soon as he gets the package. I heard Apple also honors warranties all over the world. But knowing how realiable Apple technology, I do not think you will have any trouble with it. I believe that if you spill drinks on it, it will not go haywire. No keyboards to absorb the liquid. I am about to buy a notebook ( it is now around 299$ sale price here ) but I am still sitting on the fence. Eventually I will decide and chances are I might go for that IPad which is only about 550$ Can. Plus tax. Another thing I like re: the IPad is: if I wake up at 3:00 am ( which I do every blessed day ) I do not have to go down anymore to our musty basement just to check my e-mail or open the AMB. In short, I will be sleeping with the Ipad. Maybe it will have its own pillow and blanket..:D From: icarus MessageIt cost me an arm to buy that promised I-Pad as graduation gift for my youngest. I bought it for almost twice the $600 USA price tag because it is not officially launched yet outside of the usa and a few countries; and thus Im buying a bootlegged version with no warranties whatsoever. I tried it for a few days before sending it home but after the initial infatuation on its novelties, I find it not up to par with a conventional PC. It has no cameras, no ports compatible to any of my peripherals. And it could not run adobe flash and therefore could not carry most of the videos and images of my favorite websites. They say its a work in progress however, and maybe more apps would be available in the future to address most concerns. But meantime, I would rather stick to my HP. From: bugs MessageIts hard to compare Mac vs PC. True that they can do things you command them to do. Mac though is very limited in functionality when it comes to software and hardware compatibility (most complain by mac users). though its getting better as software manu issued a mac version too. And the Imac is always MORE expensive compared to a comparable PC in terms of functionality and capability. Yeah it looks classy but try connecting range of peripherals that's mostly BLACK and Windows based. I can sling a pirated software to my PC no problem. I just installed Nero 10 that costs me 4 quid on the street. hehehehe But I think, mac is more stable and secure cos less attack is bombarded to it. Mac won't suit me I am not classy...lol! From: VIC MessageSeems like SONG OF CLAUDIA is gathering many viewers, it got almost 100 clicks in less than 2 days, and still increasing..Anyways, to preserve it permanently, I put it in my Blogger...http://victor-asingan2010.blogspot.com/2010/08/song-of-claudia.html From: Zeus MessageContinuation of How memory goes bad and your computer act like crazy and keep flagging the message like "STOP 0x0000007F (0x000000XX, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)the result is UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP" If you keep having these sorts of crashes with the exact same sort of error messages, as it most likely means you have a bad memory module, go buy in Fry's Electronics here in the US or any Computer store, and then test it if that is not the case return the memory at least you passed one of the scenario but most of the case it is the memory issue. "only in America that you can return almost anything you bought" that is why I would be happy to drive anywhere to store to buy things rather than through online, just in case I need to return things I don't have to pay shipment. Here is why I blamed the &*%$# memory, WHAT CAUSE IT? In addition to having too many programs running at the same time, the following scenario might have been the culprit: while one program was working in a certain portion of your computer's RAM memory, another program may have attempted to place its memory in the same address space, with "fatal" consequences. A great many of these stop errors are caused by troublesome drivers or hardware problems. So you need to ask yourself what, if anything, you did most recently regarding hardware. Start with the most obvious: Have I closed my laptop with coffee cup on the keyboard or have I elbowed the tower by mistake and unseated a card from its socket? If not, let's go on to unseen issues: * Have you installed any new devices recently? * Did you download and install any new service packs or other applications within the last couple of days? * Did I make any changes in the configuration of the Operating System, lately? * What about to my BIOS settings? already explained from my previous Pls! go there and read all over again. From: Zeus MessageIMAC Vs. PC windows, if you compare them thought Imac has its advantage better product, very good monitor etc. PC Windows users are hobbyist so they made the product on upgradable purposes not like IMAC most of the users are student, classy people and office peolple and journalist or writers they are not hobbyism of the technology. My co-worker has his the most expensive PC it cost 5grand whoa! the best in the west, if you compare to the IMAC not even because Imac product has limited technology not enough hobbyist in their community. I like apple though it is the style, he!he!he! From: Zeus MessageDepend on what you wanna do to the computer for playing Internet and Journal works I will recommend Imac, truly I want to have my own also, although I am a PC user. Imac beat PC in their own sales event because Imac evolved to the new generation of gadget used, called it hype for the young especially teenagers school function such search the internet for their homework, projects, etc. But better watch out of this Wnidows and Imac will down to earth I mean gonna be obsolete, Japan Operating System is coming and more advanced than this two Big guys. Whoa! I understand the word "obsolete" pertains to technology is harsh, Bill Gates is worried a lot not about money but his legacy won't stay their just history. From: VIC MessageIs it true that I-Macs are far superior than Windows?..There is a new IMac that sells for 1200 + Can $..And it has a 22' monitor..It has an 850 Gb HD..It is a very tempting offer. Many people are saying that now that Apple has brought down its prices of computers, Windows ( and Bill Gates ) will suffer in its sales, while Apple sales will be shooting up like a comet..Some are saying the day will come when Macs will dominate the market because of its superior products and services..Even its monitors are far clearer in picture than Windows... From: Zeus MessageWhy Memory goes Bad very frequently? Some symptoms occurred, may look like gibberish, but it tells you more or less what happened 0x000000XX, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000. If copy this and paste to the website I mentioned below the result will be "UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP" means that you either had a hardware problem or that the system was unable to handle all the programs you had open. If your computer is dead try to replace the microprocessor or the RAM that the most suspected part that always in trouble. Other things to do Read Your System Log, If you've been able to restart your computer and want to track down what caused the problem, check your system event viewer log. To do this, go to Control Panel » Administration tools » Event Viewer. According to what you find there, you will do one of the following: * Uninstall the last device you installed. * Roll back a device driver you updated. * Uninstall the last service pack you installed. * Use System Restore to configure your system back to the last known "good' time. (You'll find this by going to: Start » All programs » Accessories » System tools.) * Reconfigure your BIOS settings to a time before the computer it goes dead or appear the blue screen.//////////////\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\Manong Vic, mostly WI-FI issue is the software have to re-install your application maybe the file is corrupted. But be4 go to the hard ways try all of this; Make sure the wireless connection is enabled. Sometimes computer connections can become set to disabled status accidentally in the operating system. If you are using Windows, you can go to the Control Panels to check this. First click on Start, then go to either Settings and choose Control Panel or just choose Control Panel depending on your menu set up. Under the control panel, you will look for an icon called Network Connections. Under network connections, check to see that the connection with the word “wireless” is set to enable. If it shows as disabled or has a red X on it, right click the connection and choose the “enable” option. if this procedure doesn't work I will post the other option on how to check the issues of Wi-Fi... No guarantee your internet provider would accept it. E-mails, photos, etc going back and forth in the net are about 2 or 3 Megabytes, but the Claudia WMA file is around 18 or 20 Megs. I can burn it into a DVD ( very easy to do ) and I could mail you the DVD..You can duplicate the DVD in your PC ( again it is fast and easy,) and you can create a CD label for it using your photos and titling art..then you could mail the copies to your friends. I guarantee you will save time and money and your treasures files such pictures and videos before your computer face the screen of blue sky of death. How many of you have computers thrown in the garage or in the stock room because of PC cardiac arrest and can't be done to save them anymore even that some of us promises to save it and do it later but end up to buy new one. That's why am here would like to encourage each one of you to participate the discussion. Remember "More than one brain is better than one." always! Firstly, i would like to share one of I have learned. I know, maybe some of you already posses or encountered the subjects, but hey! you are welcome to discuss and share your thought or become different in some particular way whatever you want it. Before everything, we have to setup your computer first to avoid "the game of death of your Computer." Most of the later Computer did not setup the very important of your system. The system should be enable the "reboot automatically" if isn't setup when time is up for your system like error, facing the corrupt dll files or boot files cause of malicious files from Internet the system will go crazy like 360 power up never end or dead like the Blank Screen of Death, maybe you might want to set that up. To do that, select Control Panel » System » Advanced » Startup and Recovery » Settings. You'll see the Startup and Recovery screen, where you can configure boot options. From: A G Message( I followed your suggestion so I included a poem, a picture and a song to complete the imagination)** Title ** "The Song of Claudia" ** She came to her island by the sea, This time to be a lovely bride, She is back to fill a long lost dream, That failed to grow during her early teen. It was many, many years ago on the bay, When she met her groom that day, She was then fifteen barely a lady, Growing on this island by the sea.... But aspirations flew her over oceans away, Long, long ago from her island by the sea, She moved to the west leaving the east, To achieve what she wanted to be. Years after the year she became a young lady, She found a love from a man who is free, , They toiled their life and built a family, Away from home on the island on the bay.... As their love grew people would envy, How barriers were crossed along the way, Feelings and sweet words that they convey, Nourished their mornings and the rest of the day. Then it happened many, many years ago, In her world that was lovely place she knew, When she laid still one quiet night, He dashed away from the very bright light.... She traveled back to her island by the sea, To lift her sadness and to refresh her memory, When a chance encounter one bright sunny day, She met the boy who was on the bay. Ever since then he extended his hands, He liked her back to her little island, To be with her became his life’s yearning. Ignited by the spark of the second beginning.... Ever since that encounter, she felt so well, That she decided to make a lifetime farewell, To leave the country she spent many years, To come and live on her island that is dear. One day in April with the tingling of a bell, Walks the bride sheathed by a flimsy white veil, Her man by her side and at last it will be, Their celebration on her island by the sea.... I also don't post messages here on a normal basis but I will today because I have to say thanks to you for sharing the picnic fun we had during the recent Asinganians gathering to our townmates all over the world via this website. It is for me a pleasure to finally minggle with fellow Asinganians that I have heard of before during your talks with my folks (Rudy and Remy Manuel) and Manong Albert. My priorities then was to get stablished and so I never attended any Asinganian social events in the past, now I think its "doable". Finally, I met Mr. Edgar Resulto and family, I had a good chat with Uncle Lindo Villanueva, finally met Manang Harlene from Domanpot(sister of Manong Homer Nidoy)to name a few and other new faces yet now I can't remember their names. I am so looking forward to the dinner dance so not only can I dance (till sundown sana LOL) but most of all to have more fun and get better familiar with everyone. Also, I think it is indeed a good idea that Uncle Billy Torres asked you to make a newsletter, not only that I admire your writting (remember the Sunshine stories from Asingan?....I enjoy reading that so much) and you tell stories from years ago (before 1977 when I was born, :) and present that is very interesting and a lot of times funny. I just hope that through this message board, more Asinganians will come out and take time to join our dance/other activities in the future. I look forward to meeting more 30+ peps of Asingan....less represented kami sa picture taking.. ...LOL From: VIC MessageMy garden is a mixture of perennials and annuals. After the blooming period of the perennials, these plants maintain an eye pleasing verdant green foliage which attracts passers by to my garden. The annuals have a different flowering cycle, blooming for a longer period of time. Thus color is sustained until the end of fall or the arrival of frost. I keep a variety of native plants in my garden which attract birds, bees butterfiles and other kinds of insects that helps in pollination. I also made use of 1) stones of different sizes that would lend variety and contrast to my garden design plus 2) small figurines ( porcelain houses, scultures, plaster statues and a latex dinosaur that came all the way from Orlando Florida). Thus I created a sort of mini park which some kids and their parents come to visit once in a while. They come to see, enjoy and appreciate my work. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so goes a classroom axiom I heard a long time ago....http://victor-asingan2010.blogspot.com/2010/07/all-i-ask-of-youfrom-phantom.html From: usa MessageTO MY FRIEND jun jun in asingan, have a great year and God bless. From: VIC MessageOne of my favorite plays is Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera. It ran in Toronto for about 10 years at the Canon Theater..A movie was made hoping to capitalize on the popularity of the play, but many critics panned it. I myself who saw the play twice never liked the movie. But the stage version? I loved it, with its sets, the music and the performers who were able to evoke the various shades of emotions ( including extreme horror ) inspite of the limitations of a live theater. Because in a live theatre, the actors must really wear themselves out especially in rendering the songs that help piece the story together. Once you see it, you would want to see it again. And again. They say that there is a performance of the Phantom every minute of the day all around the world especially at the height of its popularity. Thanks to the business acumen of the master composer, Andrew Lloyd Weber...If I am not mistaken it was also shown one time in Manila. Price per ticket is around 3000 pesos, so they said..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2HJFavhitM From: Princessa Messagehttp://www.thestarlitecafe.com/poems/105/poem_91042996.html From: Princessa MessageWas digging up some blogs and found this. You Have The Power I wrote this poem and it became the lyrics of a song here in the Philippines: YOU HAVE THE POWER! Look to your past, woman, They made you the temptress; The sins of the world were blamed on you, You have to repay, live life in misery, They made you forget you have the power! (Cho.) The power to make your dreams come true, The power to live your life anew, The power to be the best of what you are; The power to reach for your star! Look inside you, woman, You have the power! You have in your heart the will to strive, You have in you the power to rise above your bondage; Woman, you are blessed; you're God's masterpiece! Look within you, woman, you have the strength You are a hero, the wind beneath some wings; You have the power in laughter and in tears, In joy and in pain, woman, you have to dare! Well, everything is part of life..may mga taong marunong umintindi.. merong hindi at ang gusto lang nila patunayan lagi is how they could pull themselves up by stepping on others. Napakarami ng mga mga ganyan sa Pilipinas.. kaya nga siguro.. lumisan na ang marami dito at napunta sa ibang sulok ng daigdig but they find some place in the net to go back to who really they are.. :) :).. Yep, the attributes of a person depend on his nature and his upbringing (nature and nurture) I was once paid to do a research on genetics ( a sort of a term paper) and it was amazing to know that even our dispositions has genetic bearing. LOL.. this net brought me so much experience, especially, ang makipag usap sa mga taong may iba't ibang level ng mental capacity. In person, hindi ito nangyayari sa akin, dahil in the workplace, mga bata ang kausap ko..at biriha akong nakakapaghalobilo sa ibang mga tao...LOL.. sometimes it's funny.. but most of the time, it's disgusting also. But anyway, i learn a lot of things that are too precious..and to people who cannot appreciate.. it's their loss.. LOL :) It's raining very hard in Bacolod right now... From: Zeus MessageGet some break, lunch time here I will serve it for ya'all! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2zDvz5Y6p8&NR=1 hmmmm!yummmmy! craving yet? From: icarus MessageSome people build walls and bridges because they are Civil Engineers... hehehe. From: A G MessagePeople act differently because they have individual characteristic feelings and behavior, which differentiate one person from another. Some people are introverted which make them quiet, careful and passive so they tend to build walls around themselves while others who are extroverted are sociable, outgoing and talkative who have never met a stranger and these people build bridges to have as many friends as possible. There is a biological origin as well as upbinging why people have different personality traits. From: VIC MessageWell, in real life, there are times when you build walls and there are times when you build bridges. It takes experience, common sense and sometimes, the extra sensory perception to know when to build what...What do you say, AMB users? From: Princessa MessagePeople are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges... From: VIC MessageI ALWAYS check my youtube videos to see which ones gain high viewers and which one seem to be unpopular..The Kundimans by Ric Manrique seemed to have been listened to by many, not just here in the AMB but elsewhere..So more ofhis songs, and I selected some titles not available in Youtube yet...Ric Manrique has that suave, emotion filled voice that might be similar ( but not quite the same ) to Ruben Tagalog..The first 2 are tributes to lost loves, but the 3rd one expresses the composer's love for Binibining Pilipinas..our Motherland. It could compare to intensity with Bayan Ko...From a musician's point of view, these genre of Filipino music usually starts with a minor key ( denoting sadness ) then it jumps to the equivalent key in Major denoting hope and sudden joy..These are audio only youtube creations, some songs are better performed using the heart's eye to see the images it evoke. One person's perception of music, is always different from another's....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50VzU96-ErM From: VIC MessageNothing like the present to start on something worth doing, at home or outside..There were a few but sincere Asinganians last Sunday who want to build the Toronto Association. They want to have a sort of "club" or a support group with whom they can share a sort of camarederie. Right now, there is a sort of nucleus, and hopefully this nucleus would grow into a cell and from these cells would evolve an Asingan group who would share friendship with each other, since we come from a common town. Nothing like sharing stories ( both old and new ) re: our place of birth. Let me ennumerate some of the townmates who were there: some I may not able to mention because my memory is already short, but I am good in remembering faces. I have already mentioned some names in my previous postings, but I will add some data so you may know their whereabouts..Billy and Eden Torres and Jehan ( including her parents Rudy and Remy ) reside in Brampton, Albert in Markham and I live in Etobicoke. We frequent Brampton because that is where my daughter resides. It is just 20 mins. by high-way.Another friend ( and townmate ) who resides in Brampton is Oscar Agtarap, one of the first male nurses of Asingan. He is now retired. He was not able to attend last Sunday's affair. Other Asinganians residing here( you may know some of them ) are: Coco Tarape Diaz, Edgar Guerrero ( his brod Leo is the present Medical officer in Asingan ), Barbara Soberano Pascua, Pamela and Cheery Diaz ( daughters of the late Atty. Rustico Diaz. That's the end of my list but I am sure someone might like to contribute some other names ( including theirs ) by posting them on the Board. Oh yes, Jean Martin is also here in Ontario but an hour ride away from Toronto. She is from San Vicente, I sometimes see her on facebook and she lives in Orillia, one of the most picturesque communities in Ontario. It is beside Lake Cochiching and during summer, they have marine activities on the waterside. On the opposite side of the lake is Casinorama, for those townmates who love to play cards, slot machines, or just hang around...I am sure there are more townmates hiding here. We just have to "smoke them out", ha-ha-ha! Pardon the joke...:D From: VIC MessageLast Sunday's food was quite yummy..to use a much used adjective which may not even be in the English dictionary..Somebody brought in some bopis, finely chopped beef lungs with just the right pepper taste..There were different kinds of pancit, then dinuguan, fried rice, lots of dessert and fruits..And what is an Asingan picnic without pinakbet?. Some ladies went overboard just to prepare some favorite delicacies to be enjoyed by everyone..I made some garlic peanuts. I saw how they made these timeless snacks from the balcony of Dr. Gurion's house which gives a full view of the moorning activites of the marketside..I am so happy the peanuts were gone after a while. Means they appreciate it. It is not that hard to do, just cooking oil, garlic (lots) and around 5 minutes of cooking time..It tasted better than Mimay's peanuts (maybe!)....As usual, there were some Filipino vegetable vendors and some of us, bought saluyot, paria leaves and there might be some Pangasinan bagoong too...I will feature a few photographs in a while..We are trying to spruce up some activities again and hopefully we will be publishing the date and place of the dance soon..Visit the AMB for updates...:) From: VIC MessageMy pleasure, AG..Now what is missing from your poem is a picture, or maybe two..But this needs also some kind of searching for the proper images that would enhance the beauty of your work, aside from the music..PICTURES, STORY, MUSIC..these are the elements of movies, which for me is another art form which evolved in the turn of the century..Here is a poem by R. Frost just to show you how photos add enjoyment in the reading of a poem....http://theasinganiannbspjournal.blogspot.com/2010/07/fire-and-ice.html From: A G MessageThanks, Vic. From: Salvacion MessageYes, Dr. Teofilo is my uncle, he is my father's cousin. My father is the late Dr.Salvador Bugayong, a retired military dentist.I will be seing you in one of the picnics or some other gatherings but never in the dance party !( mi mga kids kc ako, di makapan gabi na lakad) see you soon. From: VIC Messagehttp://theasinganiannbspjournal.blogspot.com/2010/07/frank-sinatra-if-you-are-but-dream.html From: A G MessageVic, it would be nice entertainment if you can put this poem in a link like my other poem. This poem was inspired by the song of Frank Sinatra “ If You were a Dream”..... Love is like a flame that can warm you or burn you down. It is sometimes elusive so the only easy recourse is to daydream. When I wrote the following poem, I had to transport myself back to my youth to capture the passion of a young person in love...Title... So Far Away!** By A.B.C.*** As I plunged myself into the thick of the night, To fathom its dark recesses for just a beam of light, It was fortunate that there was little, twinkling star, Whose rays gave light to the byway to where you are.*** Because in my mind I knew from the very start, That your silhouette fit the contour of my heart. So when l gazed upon your beautiful and gentle face, I knew then that I found you as my long, lost wish.*** It started when I first saw you in that crowded hall, Where your loveliness bounced against that mirrored wall, And the radiance of your eyes penetrated my inner soul, Which melted my yesterday’s past leaving nothing at all.*** Happily I was holding you in a very tight embrace, As beams of light showered my happy, smiling face. But when I held you tight while I went on dreaming, You left my arms empty when I woke up that morning. *** Here’s is Frank Sinatra - “If you are but a dream” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8h148onnmU From: VIC MessageHello!..Are you by chance related to Teofilo Bugayong?..He is my classmate in high school..He is a practicing MD in Asingan..Hope to meet you during the upcoming dance of the Toronto Asinganians..Date to be announced..Charge is 25$ per person, food included as mentioned yesterday..Let us produce a database of all Asinganians in Toronto so we can get in touch with all of them with just a mouse click..:) From: Salvacion MessageCongratulations to the successful gathering of the Asinganians picnic yesterday. From: VIC MessageMother Nature was very kind to some Asinganians who had a picnic yesterday at Earlebale's Park in Bathurst. It was raining cats and dogs the day before ( Saturday ) but yesterday, it was blessed sunshine the whole day!! The group maybe was small, but the chat was entertaining ( find your own chat room ) the camarederie was well knit and the food was excellent...Special mention to Jun Millano because I think he postphoned his return trip to Vancouver just to be with the group. Also to Miggie, my better half, to her Kumare Remy Manuel and to my kumpare and old time classmate Rodolfo Manuel. Eden Villanueva Torres was also with us. She is a member of the teaching profession from which she also retired...Then sometime in the afternoon, Albert Manuel gave a short talk, proposing a dance ( summer dance, maybe?) to be held soon so the spirit of companionship would be carried on. Other speakers were: Jehan, Albert's sister who expressed her wishes about the group/club/association, then Edgar Resulto who was also in favour of the dance and for strengthening our group..Last but not the least is Atty. Villamor ( Billy ) Torres. He is one of the well known lawyers from our town who worked in Manila until his retirement. He also taught law subjects in some Manila Universities. He asked me to put out a simple newsletter for the group and I said yes without much ado..It would be available in print form ( for those who do not have any computers ) and online ( for those who do ). For the Newsletter's name, I was thinking ASINGANIANS FROM TORONTO ( and beyond)..Other suggestions are welcome, but I will make the final choice..I was happy to meet Asinganians whom I never met before. I may have forgotten your complete names ( due to my dissapearing brain cells ) at this time, but for sure I will never forget your faces..Thanks for your attendance and for the sumptous grub you brought. I wish we have picnics every other weekend for summer 2010 will soon end!!! From: VIC MessageOnce a movie addict always a movie addict. A better term would be movie buff. I profess to be one. When I chat with a fellow movie fan ( in person or online ) we hardly notice the time slipping by while we recall movie titles, stars, plots, fight scenarios, etc..In Dagupan long time ago, I was inside the Pantranco station ( now gone ) along Arellano st. near Torres Bugallon, and I could not resist eavesdropping a shineshoe boy talking about his favorite movies. He was discussing a certain scene ( I believe it was the super heroine Nyoka battling an gorilla called Lucifer, owned by the villainess Vultura ) The boy used all hands and voice mannerisms to recreate the scene to awe stricken listeners ( including me ). And the amazing part is, he was using the Pangasinan dialect. Whatever word I did not understand, I was able to discern it through the story tellers' body language...Dagupan on Sundays then was a very quiet place. Most stores were closed, except of course, the theatres and restaurants. Sidewalks were clear..I walked all the way then along Dagupan's main street from the old market ( the present site of Belen's CSI )all the way to the Pantranco station. In here were the buses each in its own "hangar" depending on its destination. I would take the San Jose ( Nueva Ecija ) bound. Just one bus trip would take me all the way to Asingan via Mangaldan, San Jacinto, Manaoag, Binalonan then Asingan. ..The trip, to a young boy, was alaready a treat by itself. In Mangaldan, I enjoyed looking at the swamps/fishponds until we came to the town with the church near the vicinity of the market.. Then San Jacinto whose municipal buildings displays a statue of the young Emilio Jacinto on horseback. Was the town named after him? Was he by chance, a Saint?...Next would be the town of Manaoag and one could already see the outline of Manaoag church from a distance. This is where many "sinners" from all over Pangasinan congregate to ask forgiveness for their transgressions..Then Laoac, my birthplace. Sometimes, my uncle Juan Celestino would jump in to check the passengers and the conductors paperwork. Uncle Juan then was an inspector of the Pantranco. Then Binalonan where it would stop briefly in a station which it shares with the Benguet Auto Line (BAL). Sometimes, there would be Asinganians from Baguio waiting for a ride... The bus even passed in front of my house 15 minutes after it leaves Binalonan.. To stop it, I would scream PARA!!!, bang the roof of the vehicle and by sheer luck, it would stop right in front of our house!... From: VIC MessageThe link below this message is the link which I use in getting in this site for music MP3 downloads.I am not as good as the others in surfing..But as soon as you enter the site, all you have to do is to erase what's in its tool bar and type whatever title you are looking for; both English and Tagalog..Begin searching for the availability of your chosen title, by clicking on SEARCH..If it is, go to the window that will tell you the imbedding procedures..again click on it, or block the imbedding code shown on the window ( program begins with and ends with <div> ) then transfer it ( copy and paste ) on your Blog, Facebook account, etc..If you have seen a choice title, just e-mail it to me and I will imbed it on the document containing your poem...Good luck on your search! From: A G MessageThanks for the classical poetry concert of Elizabeth Browning, the poetry and the music have blended to bring the readers to a trip into the human spirit... What a coincidence that I was in the Dagupan theater with my big brother watching the movie “ Batman and Robin “ when that earthquake occurred, sometime in the early 50s. The movies had a strong impact in my growing up, it sort of idealized my perception of the American way of life. I thought that all Americans were wealthy and good looking and smart. Little did I know that they were just like us, human beings. My love of American movies got me in trouble when I was in grade school because there were times when I had to escape school to travel to Dagupan for the movies. My father, a math teacher, taught in the same school I went so I got caught cutting classes several times hehehe. Occasionally, a classmate and I cut classes in high school for a whole day movies in Dagupan. On retrospect, I think I learned more from watching movies because it made me become a dreamer; it made me conscious that new things come from imaginations. My movie memory is so acute that I can list down most of the movies I saw in this city..both Tagalog and Hollywood ones..There were quite a few unforgettable incidents too..Like that time when I watched VALLEY OF GWANGI ( a pre JURASSIC PARK movie ) whose dinosaurs movements were shot in stop motion camera, very laborious process..Anyway, back to the movie..As soon as the hero and his friends entered the valley which was full of live dinos, there was a momentary thunder of the monsters rampage, then the theatre shook..And the lights were off. Why? A 6 point magnitude earthquake took place..All movie goers rushed out to the exits and I saw a lady screaming pointing at the theatre water fountain..It was bubbling and small waves were forming..I rushed out to the street. All people were there. Quiet, still, and standing on the traffic line that divide the street. They were all quietly looking at the buildings. After 2 minutes the crowd stirred back to life. I did not go the restaurant or comic shop anymore that time. I headed to the mini bus station to fetch an Urdaneta bound vehicle to check whether our house in Asingan was still standing!.. For Princess, I agree that musical genre will be drowned and forgotten but not its literary. In music, most of the new artist today copied the existing or old lyrics and tried to mix in their own genre... I believed literary genre of music could stay there forever. Most of hip hop the lyrics are from old music a Love Songs from 60's 70' and 80's. From: VIC MessageBut if you want to save yourself the trouble, just send me the poetry and the title of music pieces you want to use..I can do it maybe in 10 or 15 minutes...It will be my pleasure, AG! From: VIC MessageThe link below is what I did also to Zeus quoted poetry...The procedure is something like this..It will be either easy or difficult depending on your basic knowledge of computers..You must be good in the SEARCH, COPY AND PASTE UP procedures..Then you must have at least a Blog ( I have mine at Google )where you can copy and paste the two elements needed for the Blog page. The 2 elements are: the music, and the text..The music you can pick up from the Beemp3.com. You enter this site, type the title of the song you need on its tool bar. Then click enter on your PC and the beemp3 will give you an program/code which you have to block and copy with your mouse. You have to copy everything that you see there, including <>...Then go to a blank page of your Blog, and paste it there on that blank page. If you are using Blogger, the first thing you see on the Blog page is the series of program/code. It must contain the following: <div> ....<div>. The dots betwenn the two <div> values are long coded program ..After you have laid down or pasted what you copied from Beemp3, then go again to the menu of your Blog..There is a menu there that says Preview. Click preview and what comes out would be the MP3 bar of the music which you downloaded. Click the green arrow. If your copying worked, then you will see the bar work and you will hear the music...At this point, do not click the publish button of the Blogger menu yet..Next step would be copying the text ( poetry ) ..Either click and copy the text from a word processing site, ..Paste the poetry which you copied below the MP3 music bar of your Blog page..As soon as you have both the MP3 bar and the poetry on your Blog page, then you can click Publish in your blog menu. That is how easy and complicated the procedure is..Sorry if sounds too complicated, but I tried simplifying the instructions too..I love playing around with music, graphics and photos in Blogger pages..You can add photos too, so you can have a 3rd element in your Blog page..Thanks, AG..We will chat about old Dagupan next time..:D..... http://asinganian-journal-book2.blogspot.com/2010/07/mike-dickson-bayan-ko.html From: AG the reader MessageVic, I am impressed! You made a concert out of a simple poetry reading. I thank you very much for sharing your “producer talent” which I don’t have. I really need to advance my know how about computers. Btw, is it complicated to do what you did? I have a lot of poems, some love poems and others are just expression of life and it would be enjoyable to read them if I could transform them the way you did. Do you mind writing the procedure? Thanks.. FYI, I am a male and we belong to the same generation. We probably saw each other in Dagupan, in restaurants like De Luxe or the Cinemas because I watched movies every weekend when I was in high school. The movie houses in the late 50s are Dagupan Theater, Flor, Ideal and Ligaya which showed only Filipino movies. A song played in a jukebox at any restaurant cost 10 centavos. From my teenager days, Every twilight until supper transistor radio are in max volume with tasongtaso and his partner echoing their voices and of course the signature strums that parents, grandpas and grnadmas were in it and absolutely no complain from the neighbors. The very funny thing was wherever you go even in a mile or so, the sounds from the radio will follow you. From: Mr Pogi MessageThe "kundimans" will forever stay in our culture as love songs were the bridges to convey one's undying love in the early courtship times...growing up in the barrio ,my late father once bought me a guitar from the visayas where he used to work and a lot of times, babbaros constantly borrow them whenever pretty ladies visits our barrio with some friends and stay over. The late Paeng Yabut's radio program Tayo'y Mag-aliw, frequently plays these eternal kundimans and they're soothing to the heart before going to bed...you mentioned about bukanegan, after Pedro Bucaneg,a great ilocano poet, yes they're very popular during the pre-martial law days during fiestas, they're normally verbal exchanges in melodies or samiweng between a man and a woman about a topic, it could be love, traditions, nature and others..it was usually a prelude to a zarzuela...while the kansionan was about anything a guitarist will have in mind, it was almost the same as the bukanegan only theres' laughter and comical rendetion in it's theme..Lorenzo Tasontaso, was the most popular guitar man during that time as far as i can remember, that there was even a radio slot in Dagupan where we listen to them every friday night(awan pay ti adu nga tv idi) ,he came to Sta. Maria one time and the kansionan was held at old Gabaldon Building of the East Central School.it was always jampacked with people ,as early as before twilight ,people from all corners of town reserved their spots just to be comfortable during the show.....that's all i can remember during those days..... Diomedes was supposed to star in a Concert here in the city, but he succumbed to a heart attack before his departure, and so Ric Manrique, a very good friend, took his place..Ric's voice is so expressive and it could tug at your heartstrings as he warble its lyrics .Like this trio from his reportoire of Pilipino kundimans. Sad are the songs, but as every music lover knows, many of the sad ones are very beautiful and will never, never be forgotten.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2q17qW3kI From: VIC MessageThe town plaza last Fiesta 2010 looked like a hodge podge of talipapas joined to one another..If you want to kill some time then, just go there, preferably in the morning..I heard each vendor rented 20 grand ( am not sure ) for the whole season..So they were given a month to sell their stuff..All sorts of clothes ( designer imitations ) Levi belt buckles, baby clothes, wooden figurines, hats, mats, pots, snacks, burned DVDs or music CDs, magazines ( no pornos) and the list could go on and on..The plaza is surrounded by this Night Market. Called such because it is more comfortable to shop at night. You see, the Fiesta dances are going on, the rides are turning about with a few wild screams from kids with weak stomachs, one could check the balut and mani vendors on one table, the San Miguel Blue on the other..Talk about networking...There are also silver jewelries, key chains, religious statues, hamburger stands with cardboard thin patties and almost no condiments,..then there are the games of chances ( chances are you will lose your hard earned cash ) ..But the surprising thing was: there were no unwanted incidents ( fistfights, stabbings, picking of pockets, passing of counterfeit bills )..Yep this is the best time to let 'em circulate..Maybe there were a few but I did not get any..When we were brought to the auditorium, Dr. Gurion asked his driver to bring us there on his van..The van went slowly through a seething mass of people..I was expecting some drunk might have been crushed under the wheels..But then, people just got out of the way until the driver opened the door and let us out. And my oh my, the humid air and the smell of gas lamps, bibingka pans with burning coals on top, made your nostrils cringe. Especially when you passed under the Mayor's Gate..They still use it as a urinating area, what with all those beer washing down those adidas barbeque ( chicken feet ) and sticks of broiled pork strips..!!Feel like booking for Fiesta 2011 already?..:D From: VIC MessageSa mga Ilocano naman, ang tawag sa mga tulain ay Bucanegan..Ito ay ipinangalan kay Bucaneg, isang magaling na makata na Ilocano...Idi ngamin, awan pay iti radio, wenno TV..Ngem daguiti tataao, lalo no adda piesta, kayat da iti agbuya iti sarsuela, kasionan, moro-moro, etc..Idi ubingak, adda pay iti moro moro wenno cancionan idiay plaza no kasta nga piesta..Nagpukawen dagitoy nga bubuyaen..Awanen ti simmukat kadaguiti nlaing nga agdaniw nga kailian..Adda met sa iti mai radio nga cancionan ( ni tasong-tasong sa ketdi ) ... From: A Reader MessageI enjoyed reading the poem by Princesa which caught my attention. I also enjoy writing poems so I will share with you one of my passionate poem. I don't know how to put the poem in a link because I am not very literate with the computer. Although I worked in the R&D of a pharmaceutical company where I retired two decades ago ( I retired extremely young just in case you think I am very old, hehehe)I learned just enough because we always had our secretaries… I have been thinking why women enjoy poetry than men. I know that when I write poetry, feelings are more intense than when writing prose. Does it mean then that women are more passionate in matters of love? Sweet words usually penetrate a woman’s intuition and leave her off guard. The good feeling will envelop and carry her to a dream. That’s when love starts with a smile, grows with words and ends up either with a laughter or with a tear.... here’s a poem for reading entertainment.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Xl17B-Z0A&feature=related....*** Title *** Through the Years*** By AG*** Beloved, you should have known without my telling, That you are the reason why I enjoy the joys of living, That to live a life when you are far out of sight, Is like living in the dark devoid of a guiding light.*** You should know how much I love holding your hand, Whenever we leave footprints that we scatter around, The fun, the laughter we had with all the hugs and kisses, Those are treasures I keep along with your sweet caresses.*** Whenever you are with me, my heart races out of bound, Because the effect of your touch is very deep and profound. And I always have pain and heartburn whenever you’re away, Because I dream and think about you at night and all day.*** You should have known how much I love and adore you, Because never had I said anything that prove untrue, Remember that no other woman would be in my dream, Because you are the one and only who would ever use my name.... From: Alakdan MessageI like your poem as it conveys hope, flickering may seems. You speak from the heart. Hope your morning will start a new brighter day in his loving arms. From: VIC MessagePoetry is mostly self expression of emotions, all kinds of 'em that lurks down deep in the human psyche..Sadness, pain, exaltation..yours I guess is sadness, but with a glimmer of hope at the end..Writing poetry is comparable to making a sketch with nothing but a pencil ( no colours ) or playing a piano solo or guitar solo with no orchestral back up..Lesser is more is also applied to poetry. You are trying to tell a whole lot with just the basic words, quite difficult, no?..Of course, there is also the narrative poetry, but that is a horse of a different colour..:D..But I believe poetry has its stark beauty, discernable to people who are more sensitive than others., who could feel deeper, hurt more but who could also love with greater passion..For that's what poetry is about: passion for life, and also an obituary after death... Luckily I landed a job quickly as security guard my first 3 months of salary I bought a computer a PC-compatible with DOS 3.0 286sx 8MB HD, 4MB memory, 5.5 floppy disk and dial up modem, in 1989 I subscribed AOL internet... opps! From: VIC MessageMy first PC, as I have mentioned before was an Atari XL sold on clearance at a Simpson's store in Toronto..I learned DOS Commands, how to write basic programs, enjoyed Video Games..But most of all, I started using music writing programs for Atari XL..Those games/softwares were not cheap, either!..I do not know whether there is a DOS in the new PCs now a days, but kids may not know the difference between a DOS and a DOS POR DOS!But it was a very nice, exciting era then..Now games dominate the younger PC users..which is bad ( in my opinion)..more on this topic later.:) From: VIC MessageThis is a vintage video, but never posted on Youtube yet..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hcy4HmQYv-Q From: Icarus MessageMy very first desktop was a PC-AT clone with an MS-DOS operating system that boots out from a 5.5" floppy disk. I bought it in 1989 for a then princely sum of P24,000. It comes with a "Paper White" CRT monitor (which was a trendy novelty at that time when the standard was the green monitor). It has no hard-disk, no dvd drive, no USB, no mouse, just sockets for keyboard, monitor and printer. Everything has to be loaded from a floppy. My word processor is Wordstar 4 (where I could only view a portion of my typed document and would never get to see what it would finally look like until it is printed), worksheet is Lotus 123 (sometimes Quatro) only to be updated with WYSIWYG technology much later. The computer games in my floppy collection includes Pacman, Digger, Froggy, Space Invaders, Solitaire; later on Grand Prix Driving, Chess and Double Jeopardy adapatation. I write my programs in GWBasic and later on, QuickBasic and Turbo Pascal. These languages have no Graphical Interface and I have to create my own user interface just to make things convenient and easy for the user. I dabbled with DBase 4 for database Programming, too. Computers were basically stand-alone in those days and even local networking is considered advanced. Internet is a distant proposition. If you cannot write programs, or do not have to write extensibly, or do not have to process voluminous data, owning a PC at that time is a pretty useless proposition. It could not be used for playing DOTA or chatting on Yahoo Messenger, it could not give you access to Facebook, the AMB or your other favorite sites. Still, I feel lucky to be a part of that generation that was in the midst of the infancy days of programming and the rapid evolution of the PC. In this age of blackboxes and plug-n-play, the younger people have become too dependent on softwares and processes that they dont fully understand. From: icarus MessageMy infatuation and love affair with computers and programming started early and goes naturally with my profession. It came from a deep desire to automate and generalize calculation procedures, mostly in the field of engineering, that are considered either too tedious or too intricately complex for manual computation; and to make these dreaded procedures as easy and simple routines for everyone. I take pleasure in breaking down a complicated problem into a series of essential tasks, solving each facet step by step, systematizing the sequence and translating them into simple but definite instructions for the computer. The machine would then carry out the task with undiminished enthusiasm, without getting tired or feeling bored and sans a single deviation from the procedure. But programs to be useful must not be limited to a particular case but must be designed to be as general as possible to cover a multitude of possible cases. If for instance, a program is written for the analysis of space frames, it should be able to handle all kinds and shapes of frames and each and every conceivable loading and support configuration. My early professional programs were not with the PC but with a programmable calculator (Casio 602P) using a sequence of fundamental arithmetic statements, with 36 memory holders, branching with if-then-else statements, and looping by means of the goto command. To say it has very limited capability is a major understatement, especially when ranged with today’s extremely powerful PC’s. But even with that ancient machine, I managed to write useful and valuable programs. How? They say, ingenuity and improvisation are the hallmark of Engineers and computer programmers. I’ll cite a simple example: How do you take the square root of a number (say the square root of 75) just by using the four basic operations? If you go by the traditional procedure that we were taught in High School Algebra called “completing the square”, that small machine would run out of memory even before you have completely encoded the program. Instead of that classic technique, I used a cut-and-try approach that will start with an “initial guess” of the root - say, 8 and use it as a divisor to 75 and thus, giving me a quotient of 9.375. The average of my divisor 8 and the quotient 9.375 is equal to 8.6875 which is, in fact, a much closer approximation to the real root than my initial guess! I will then program the calculator to repeat the same sequence, and each time, using the resulting average from the previous cycle as the “initial guess”. After just two repetition of this incredibly simple procedure, I have the square root of 75 = 8.660254038 which is correct to the 10th decimal place! How much neater can you get? That year, 1982/1983 computer start to evolve but still a flint-stone age compared today, you are right (ICARUS) we gone further already. I remember back then from my computer school our computer has no Hard Drive using tape deck cassette to store data, they called it ATARI and Commodore Amiga with The world's first single-chip fully-32-bit microprocessor, with 32-bit data paths, 32-bit buses, and 32-bit addresses that was a bit of Hi-tech compared to late 1970's just 5 years later in your era he!he!he! Yet, a computer Science wasn't a curriculum or maybe wasn't that popuplar, whenever it could be back then maybe, for sure that would be my course. Anyway, BSECE have 7 computer as our Major subjects, fair enough I guess! From: VIC MessageIf you are a visitor to Toronto, your host by instinct will bring you, first to Eaton centre, the biggest mall in the heart of the city, which is the capital of Ontario. During summer free cultural events are shown in what is called Yonge ( pronounced YOUNG ) and Dundas square..The square ( or plaza if you prefer to call it such ) is located just in front of the Eaton center. The square has an outdoor stage, some chairs so spectators can watch entertaining fare like singing or dance groups from all over. Everyday, there are also mini booths in the square that sell all sorts of stuff..Just be aware that these trinkets, etc. do not come cheap. And you must know how to haggle with the vendors..But there is always a festive atmosphere in this area...And there are also ocassional costumed characters standing by ready to have photos taken with you ( if you are willing to give a few coins for donations )..Yesterday, I saw Batman sans Robin standing there having his photo taken with some ladies..One time, it was an "angel", or a chess expert who would play with you for 5$, win or lose..This is the prime spot in Toronto. There are establishments nearby like HMV, FUTURE SHOP ( now owned by Best Buy ) clothing and shoe stores, but these are just the ordinary, run of the mill joints. If you go for Designer stuff, you take a bus or a train ( the subway ) and asked to be brought to Bloor and Yonge..Here is the locale of designer stores which sell expensive bags, clothes, shoes jewelries, etc. etc. etc...Your wife would love to spend her time here while you might like to check the latest high end sound systems in Bay Bloor Radio... From: VIC MessageIt is quite hard to select a suitable topic, but I always write about something I love..and something which our readers like to read..When I was still a correspondent in the Philippines, I sent stories to my editor in the defunct Philippine News Service, and I take note of whatever stories are bought and published by the major dailies in Manila then. Then I wrote more about those topics. What you write must also depend on what you love to write about. Your piece shows how familiar you are with the subject. Tourism stories before seemed to be the most markettable articles... And I do love writing about places...I have never been to Bacolod and if you can write something about the tourist spots in your province ( places to see, food to eat, yes food seem to be connected with tourism topics ) then I will be happy to read about them..When it comes to politics, I love to write about it from a historical point of view..The trouble with politics is that people have different views about it...They say that the most controversial topics are politics and religion, the safest ones are about the weather and your health. The last two ones were mentioned as such in the play/movie MY FAIR LADY...Bottom line, write about something you love and we will love to read about them too.. From: Princessa MessageI browsed your posts here.. lol..and I don't know what topic to inject for a good discussion. Politics? Aahh I guess I still have to give the Aquino administration enough needed time and I observe how people feel about the new government. So many are optimistic. Just this morning, we were at the GSIS and teachers expressed their positive expectation for having Daniel BITAY Lacson, a fellow Negrense, on the top position of the GSIS in the Aquino administration. I am optimistic as well. It is not good to see retirees like beggars.. and it is indeed very disgusting to witness teachers who died and were buried even without burial expenses because the GSIS have to suspend their burial benefits until all loans were being paid by the total lump sum they were to receive. That's very cruel but this kind of GSIS process is I guess not really exposed or given much attention... :) Nice day everyone... I fought the urge to get one from their Apple store. It was so user friendly ( touch system ) that her almost 2 year daughter sometimes play with it by touching some some icons on the screen...Of course, as I write, a new "toy" is being groomed and primed for the next trade show which promises new. exciting thingies..I love checking the TVs ..The 3-D ones are now using a technology used during the '50s..: the double image system. But with special glasses, only one image dissapears, and a kind of "depth" and" realism" is created..Remember the red and blue pencils of old?..When I was in Grade 6, some classmates and I were creating primitive 3-D pictures. To watch the pictures in 3-D, we used some googles made of red and blue cellophane bought from the local stores in Asingan..These new TVs in Toronto cost a whooping 3,000 plus dollars, but I am not in a hurry to buy any of it. The early buyer is usually burned real bad. I bought one of the first video recorders in the 70s here in Toronto..It cost then 2000 $, a bulky Sony Betamax, competing for existence with the VHS. Beta movies then cost 120 $ per title ( original copies ). Now where sre these toys?..Rotting somewhere under some landfill!! From: icarus MessageI am ancient enough to be a little acquainted with punch cards and Fortran. No, it was not in the workplace but during my undergrad student days in SLU Baguio. Computers were then humongous, quite as bulky as your household refrigerators with reels of tape and they were only found in a special room in SLU called the Computer Centre. The computer subject then is 95% theory and spent mostly doing binomial arithmetic, flowcharting, pseudo-coding and programming on paper, not on the actual machine. In the two semesters of Comp 1 and Comp 2, we got to visit the Encoding Room 3 or 4 times and ran the actual computing machine once but only once. The encoding room is where we used special typewriters to encode our programs into Holerith codes on punch cards. Once encoded, the program becomes a matrix of tiny rectangular holes on a series of cards, the size and thickness of a check and the program become as legible as the barcode. Bugs would be very very difficult to trace on them. Moreover, if the card sequence is shuffled, everything is f_ _ _ed! Instead of punching real program codes, some busy themselves punching recognizable patterns on the cards like hearts and flowers and trees to impress their BF/GF’s. My very first program (actually a group collaboration because we were grouped to fit us to the limited number of machines) was to solve the roots of cubic equations – now, a standard routine in some hand held calculators. After exhaustively developing the algorithm, encoding and manually debugging, we ran it successfully on SLU’s IBM machine. What we accomplished in weeks could now be done by a schoolboy with a few clicks on his Graphical Calculator. Oh how far we have gone in computing! From: Chief MessageYup! Those were the days; fix the bug then re-compile using 3-feet stacks of IBM cards in a tray and feed them through the reader (we are talking COBOL or FORTRAN) ... today it's all plug & play.... ask your Chief - he'll tell you more ;) From: Zeus MessageI'm thankful to the moth that initiated it all by flying into my keyboard's gaps, what a coincidence huh! The TPL needed someone with a knowledge of Spanish, and she stated in her application that she knows the language...That was almost 30 years ago. So much water went under the bridge since then.Lesson?..It is better to fail after doing something than to fail without doing anything..If negativism dominated her then, she could have said.."I will not apply for a job because I know I will not be hired anyway.." But she was at the right place at the right time...This adage is still applicable now a days, with some modifications of course..And one of these is Computer literacy..In the 70's PCs were still in its infancy and most work were still done by humans...:) From: VIC Messagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOr22mAVs8Y From: VIC MessageWomen have that extra sensory perception ( ESP ) when it comes to running a household from washing the dishes to dusting the rooms..They even can detect if her husband is dating another woman..:D..just kidding!... From: VIC Messagehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD3hbw7vgGQ From: VIC MessageMatrimony is quite an adventure, starting from the time of courtship, marriage all the way up to the golden wedding anniversary...Miggie was the best looking teacher in Divine Word Academy before. She has quite a number of suitors from various walks of life. There was this local radio announcer in Dagupan who always mentioned her name in the opening lines of his radio program. He belonged to a rich family in the city. Then there was this athletic guy from Baguio, a highlander whose parents wanted him to become a doctor ( he did not make it, cuz he became love stricken,) there was also this priest who told her just say the word and I will renounce my priesthood (!).Jeez, men are really attracted to beautiful women like ants to a mound of sugar..Anyways, she claimed I attracted her attention when she heard me playing an electric piano during a lunch break at the school one time. I was then playing TRISTEZAS DEL ALMA ...Then I wrote her quite some love letters and a few poems when I was already serious with her.Put my writing ability to work that time..:)....Plus a few good words from my good friend Ben Hur to her on my behalf. Every little thing helped..:)...Years later, our whole family came all the way from Canada to take a sentimental journey to Asingan. We all met Aurora Sandoval, her bosom friend at the DWA who was the principal at that time. She said to my kids:"Your parents have a very unique love story that started in this school..."..Marriage is always a bumpy ride, but I did my best to kind, considerate, helpful and mindful of what she likes ( and dislikes ) so the ride would be a smooth one..No marriage is perfect, because people are not perfect..But with Divine help, two imperfect persons can sometimes create an almost perfect union. I will tell you a little story that really happened last Monday afternoon. After our 4-5 pm sing-along-session, Miggie and I dropped by the cafeteria to sample coffee from the facilty's brand new machine. It has about 20 varieties of coffee ranging from double cappucino to French Vanilla. It is free for volunteers. That was 5:10 pm and our next session was 6:30 pm..The cafeteria is just beside this gorgeous dining hall where the residents of the Facility take their dinner. Beside the dining hall was a German made piano.. Then Miggie asked me ( sounded more like an order )."Why don't you play the piano?" "I said "No, I can not just do that..The residents might think I am showing off.."...I continued enjoying my French Vanilla..Then I changed my mind: "Okay, just one song.."... So I walked to the piano, and started playing THE HOLY CITY by Adam, a classical religious piece which is one of my favorites. After the song, I stood up. Then the residents clapped enthusiastically. I just smiled, waved my hand and went back to my seat.. Out of the blue, a staff member of the Senior's home came to me and said.."The residents are requesting if you could play some more..They like your playing. And if you are around, please feel free to practice on our piano because you are making many of them happy!" Miggie was smiling and this time, I played more selections: LOVE STORY, TO LOVE AGAIN, BLUE MOON, etc. I already felt comfortable. I felt I was doing something good and even if I did not get paid, I know that I am sharing my music talents to the residents many of which are in wheel chairs and walkers. As I stood up, again they applauded. If Miggie did not prode me to go there and play, then I was not able to overcome my inborn shyness and fear of displaying my talents. ... So time, in a certain sense, does not exist. It seems to be a series of images that change ( or remain unchanging) as minutes pass by...Anyways, I spent an hour or so at the Miami International. Our flight back to Toronto covers two flights: an Orlando to Miami trip via AA ( takes about 30 mins ) and upon reaching Miami, we had to wait 3.5 hours for the Toronto bound connecting flight.Upon reaching Miami, I was starving. Those people at the security confiscate soft drinks and sometimes sandwiches, so we did not pack any..Upon reaching the Gate where to wait for our connecting flight, I began to search for some restaurant, preferably one that does not hit you in your pocketbook. There was one just beside Gate. I looked at the prices. Sandwiches are 9 $..US! Drinks are 3$...When they served snacks in the Orlando-Miami flight, I was asleep..Not much loss cause they are just serving half a cup of drinks and a teeny weeny packet of pretzels..Anyways, back to Miami International. I walked away from that restaurant and headed to a long almost empty hallway.. I saw a few botiques, a magazine store and then..eureka! I saw a counter called La Carreta. The cashier was a good looking Cubana. Most of the Latinos in FL came from Cuba, so I heard..I checked the snacks in her glass counter. Chicken empanadas. 2.25 $ each. The crust looked tempting, golden brown. I bought 2 of them plus a pop for 2.25..Hey, my pocketbook hardly felt it..So i headed back to our lounge with a spring in my steps. "Wanna taste a Miami empanada?" I offered one to Miggie...The filling is made up of chicken, small potato cubes, spices..I ate the morsels slowly. Oh my, the taste is different from the empanadas I tasted in Toronto. I shared half of mine with Emma who was eating some sushi her Mom bought from a Japanese take out a long, long way out in the opposite end. After I finished the delicacy, I washed it down with coke and then I let go a distinctive, gut wrenching burp. "Grandpa!" said Emma. From: VIC MessageMy last posting is a blending of the new and old..The Marvel Super heroes created by Stan Lee started with comic books and it branched out into TV cartoons, block buster Hollywood movie Franchises, action figures and most of all, Computer games..I think the last item proved to be the most lucrative of them all since children ( and many adults ) are hooked to these pastimes..The superheroes of the '50s were: Captain Marvel and his family ( Capt. Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel ) vs. Sivana and his evil family who were perpetually seeking means of destroying the world so they can extract a hefty ransom from the authorities...There was also Dollman. Small as a doll but it has flying powers and his punch could knock the living daylights out of a baddie...then Nyoka, the Jungle Girl, Plastic Man, Hawkman, Aquaman and of course Batman and Superman who still exist now a days. Capt. Marvel and Superman had a court battle thru the agents and artists who claimed that Capt. Marvel is a plagiarism of Superman. Though the color of their bullet proof costumes are different their flying and wrecking powers are the same..The decision of the court re: copyright infringement went down in favour of Superman, thus the Capt. Marvel I adored as a child dissapeared from the skies forever. His battle cry SHAZAM was silenced ...I had the comic books of these early super heroes and if only these were not used for kindling the stove or as toilet paper, then I would have some high priced collectibles now a days which I could sell for a fortune in E-Bay..:)..The Diner building is a memento to the TV sitcom which introduced the Fonz ( Henry Wrinkler ) to the TV watching audiences in the early days... Verily, I tell you if you stay focused you will be able to halve the gap each season.” Kobe thought for a while…just 11.5% after this season, 5.75 % the next, 2.875 … he smiled as if very pleased. They took all good players available from west meaning there will be no problem for the Lakers to go to Finals and KOBE will get a lot of rest during fourth quarters. Magic still capable and they are still the team to beat. Magic need consistent shooting guard that won't choke in the playoff they are hanging in there and waiting, everybody anticipating their moves toward trading. Their average salary cap usage and significant players such good option to allure other team in trading to find out which player they need to fill up missing pieces from their rosters. East teams are very competitive this coming season no doubt, that is bad for the Miami heat because they have to work hard and play hard where they could be prone in injuries. Lets' see! From: icarus MessageWith or without the superstar complexes to compound the Heats, there is no denying that they are a force to reckon with in the coming season. Who will play second fiddle to whom may not be as important as to who will handle and control them and put a lid on their egos. Coach Eric Spoelstra may not have that level of credibility yet as Phil Jackson but Pat Riley has more than what it would take to command total respect. He should be able to share some of his magic to Erik. He once orchestrated together the likes of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, James Worthy, Byron Scott, AC Green, Michael Copper - all certified superstars but played very smoothly under his baton while playing for the showtime lakers of the 80's. Riley should seize control from the very start and show everyone who is boss. That's the only way to reign in the clashing egos. Once they learn to subvert personal glory to team spirit, the Heats will be among the best. Perhaps good enough to foil LA's run for the 3 peat. I could sense some concern - even panic - among the Lakers, this early... hehehe. Its just an speculation -dont shoot... hahaha. From: Zeus MessageEverybody cannot blame the Cavalier team it is the timing of the free agent. If LJames contract happened not the same time with those 2 elite players LJ and C. bosh I believed these 2 players will land to CAVS. The cavalier has salary caps problem too high because their significant players signed up before their contract because LJames wanted them to stay... of course he (LJ) is one of the team designer just like everybody else a team leader. Also, they are the elite team hard to get high standard draftees... the same as the Lakers. Everyone especially the CAVS owner anticipating Lebron to sign up back to the team. What he did? abandoned them just like that, that's nht right! Pat Riley is the winner and the best Team Designer right now he planned it 4 years ago since he traded Shaq to Phoenix to clear all the high rise Salary cap. He can see the future. I think he acquired that talent from his mentor Jerry West. From: Uncle Ben MessagePity I didn't get to closely watch you grow up. You were not of school age yet when I left town for college. But let me tell you, besides Marlene, you and Ambong never ran out of eager arms to hold you. Marlene was the first one to enjoy that much attention, then you and Ambong came along. Every chance we had, we took turns carrying you. We were that hungry to play with little kids like you. Ambong was more emotionally sensitive than you were. We had to be careful not to make him cry because if he did, he would turn blue from losing his breath. The most difficult thing to watch about you was your habit of keeping your food in your mouth for the longest time. By the time you finished breakfast, it's lunch time. Your favorite among us was your Uncle Arthur. You used to cry everytime you saw him leave for school. Then he left for the seminary hoping to become a priest someday but, we all know what happened with that. Then it was my turn to go. I don't remember seeing you on the day I left. It was the morning after my high school graduation. I stopped in Manaoag for a brief pilrimage at the shrine of the miraculous Lady of Manaoag, then caught a Pantranco bus for Baguio. I made a promise to myself to come home to Asingan only after I earned my college degree. Of course that didn't happen because I came home for Cielo's baptism. I was her godfather. (May she rest in peace.) I was in my junior year at the time. I heard of you early academic successes. For instance, your participation in a provincewide competition. Not too sure if it was math or spelling but you did an outstanding job in that event. I'm sure you had a lot of those academic conquests which slipped by me because I was too absorbed trying to make it through college while working at the same time. I wrote briefly about my life of deprivation as a working college student in my autobiography that was required by the diocese of Virginia for my petition for annulment of my first marriage in the Catholic Church. The diocese official who interviewed me prior to granting my request was quite moved by that part of my sad story. She was misty-eyed, her chin was down on her chest. Anyway, back to you. Yes your name came from that classic Philippine novel. I volunteered the name "Elmer" for you but your Auntie Rosing prevailed. It was a good choice, indeed. Nobody in town (that we knew of) was named Sonny or Isagani at that time. You would have been the second "Elmer" known to us because there was a guy in poblacion who went to school in Dupac with your Auntie Mila whose name was Elmer (Agsalud). And yes, you did have one heroic act that I can remember. It was on your Auntie Laling's wedding to Uncle Sally. Alex, who was going to be the ring bearer could not be awakened from deep sleep. Your Apong Misiong cautioned everybody not to push him because he would surely throw a fit if he woke up. Who would know him better than his own father? So the one and only choice was you. The houses being so close, I heard your Auntie Rosing yell out a command through the window for your Mama to get you ready. Everybody was kind of stressed out because it was time to hit the road for the church and no ring bearer, yet. I was in your house that morning. You were doing the usual thing, playing with your food in your mouth early in the morning. Your Mama picked you up, your mouth full of food and got you dressed for the occasion. You saved the day for the happy couple. I'm sure you did other feats of heroism. I know you can write about them and let us enjoy your stories. So long. Kobe claimed it all and he has 5 rings one shy to MJordan. Now, because I believed the Miami team won't last 7 years as their contract is. Maybe after 2 championship the team will break into pieces then each of those 3 players will go to a different team and race to claim another championship of their individuality and that's hard to be happened. See what happened to SHaquile O'neil he has only 4 an no more. Because to that time all these 3 players are going to be in the certain ages and there will be another star is born. ha!ha!ha! From: Zeus MessageWhat is Lakers when everybody left Kobe alone in year 2005? Kobe built the team from scratch everybody was only a role player until Gasol landed on them, but who is gasol before he moves to Lakers his stats were start pulling down and did not even went to All star in 2 consecutive years, he was just a back up players from his all star appearances. He is not a superstar only a role player not like Miami these 3 players their position are a core of the team, so who will be the superstar and who will be the role player. Did you know what had happen from Boston at the playoff time between Paul Pierce and Rondo a grudges built up. Peirce want to be the man but if square it off rondo is the man. What happened when the 2 stars collided the results BANG!!! no championship, it's all about ego especially James and wade both are stat paddlers, they are are in their prime cares about their statistics to stay in the helm. To be an NBA legend have to stay in the course breaking records of statistics, now these 3 core players one or two of them have to give way, who? Hey! buddy nice conversation... I respect your opinion sana nga mag work yong Miami (I doubt it..he!he!he!) and I hope Riley won't take over the coaching just let the Filipino coach "Spoeltra" to handle it. From: icarus Messageit depends on whose viewpoint you are asking. his transfer would not have been necessary if cavalier's management were as supportive as the bull's and the laker's and have given james a reasonably strong supporting cast. MJ had Pippen, Rodman, Kukoc, Harper, Kerr; Kobe has Gasol, Odom, Fischer, Artest, Bynum. Who does LeBron has? Either past their prime players like Jamison or B-grade point guards Mo and Gibson and a never heard center named Varrejao. How could you win in the cut throat competition that the NBA is with such a rag-tag line up? Since the cavaliers owners are not doing much about it, LeBron cant be blamed for looking for better team mates. Him, Bosch and Wade played together for the olympic team and so chemistry would come easier. Rather than stagnate in cleveland, with no sign of a team overhaul, the move to Miami is a master stroke. Look out Lakers, tghe Heats are coming to get you! From: Zeus MessageI think Lebron JAmes ruined his legacy from his decision to team up with Wade an Bosh. Players comparison from their prime which one is better: Shaq Vs. James, Kobe Vs. Wade, KArl Malone Vs. Cris Bosh, Gary payton Vs. who? I actually borrowed it from Auntie Lita but I never returned them after you all went to Guam. These were my informal reading materials which I voraciously read and re-read many, many times from cover to cover. It is from these books that I learned to appreciate good literature and we were probably nurtured from the same books. I did not find such good quality materials from the NCS or RA Textbooks during my time. Reading materials then were somewhat difficult to come by. Every Wednesday, my cousin Ambong and myself will be eagerly awaiting Apong Abe’s Bannawag. While he reads on his rocking chair, we will be pestering him from behind until he is finished with it - prematurely surrendering the magazine to us, most of the time, because of our boyish meddling and mono-syllabic reading aloud of the adventures of Captain Barbell, etc. Sometimes, I would go under Apong Pe’s “parsa” and remove the magazine pages wrapped around the dangling ampalayas just to read their contents. I was such a sponge then but there is not enough to be absorbed. What I lacked in books is filled in by komiks. Auntie Mila has a big collection and she has a network of komiks addicts in the neighborhood. I used to run errands for her, returning and retrieving komiks from “neighbor’s” houses which could be half a kilometer away. I didnt mind the distance, its the chasing dogs that I detest. >>>> I don’t know how I was given my name nor was I aware that there is a story behind it. But I am happy with it. Its quite rare and unique. And in all the literature that I read and movies that I watched, my name is always associated to a good guy - which I am. But in Rizal’s El Fili, Isagani is a hopeless romantic (which I am, also) who chose to save her ex-GF from the explosive filled lamp aimed at decimating the top civil and religious leaders who were in attendance at her wedding party. Thus, he unwittingly exposed and untracked the revolution which is to start that night. Now, would have I done the same given the situation… most probably yes. So to prevent such a treason on my part, I married ahead of my ex… . From: Icarus MessageHey buddy, looks like we'll be having a very competetive and interesting season coming up in the NBA. Which made me feel a bit uneasy that I started praying as the plane made its descent. See? Nothing like a pinch to make you think of God to help you out!..:)....When the Captain made its announcement that the plane is about to descend into Toronto International airport, we were above the cloud bank. Sun shining brightly. Sky all blue if you look up.And then, the plane entered a cloud bank to start its landing. And then, visibility was reduced to zero..How the hell would the pilot know where to land if he can not see where he is going? I said to myself. He has his dashboard and headphones and voices from the control tower. But there is nothing like a good visibility to give you a safe landing..So I noticed the plane starting to circle. Maybe waiting for the cloud to clear away. One could tell the plane is circling because the bright spot in the cloud bank keeps circling around. Meanwhile, I could imagine the gas tank of the plane getting lower..:0)..How many rotations did the plane make? I stopped counting. I just waited for the plane to land, to feel the wheels skid on a runway..But still...I guess the pilot did not wait for the cloud to clear. All of a sudden, we found ourselves already a few hundred feet above the runway, then Bingo..! The plane shuddered, the flap of its wings stood up..( these flaps I guess help the plane decelerate before it runs out of runway ) and then it started taxiing approaching the airport bays. Then I notice how dark the clouds are. The whole sky is nothing but a mess of threatening nimbus clouds waiting to drop their load at any moment..The plane approached one empty bay ( don't know if this is the right term for it ) so it could connect to an exit into the terminal. Bay-am ta no manayon ti biag ko ket agbalinak to piman nga mannurat. That will be in my next life. Then my English instructor's wish for me to be published, will indeed come true. I had to take a class in English Composition as a pre-requisite to my BSN. I must have impressed her a lot with the papers I wrote. One day she took her daughter to the Navy Tricare clinic where your Auntie used to work at. She got curious, apparently, when she noticed your Auntie's name tag which of course, is my last name. To make the story short, she found out that your Auntie is my wife. When your Auntie came home that night, she related to me how this Mrs. Cooper went on singing praises for me in the presence of your Auntie's co-workers. "She calls you the "last sensitive man of the 20th century." I was tickled to death to hear that. Anyway, with time, maybe I could develop half of your writing prowess and style. Some old fellow predicted that you will grow up to be a sharp man. You must have been three years old at the time. You developed some indurated lesions on your scalp. They were rather large, almost egg size. If you were in America then, I'm sure that the clinician would have ordered a whole bunch of diagnostic tests to find out the etiology of your condition. But back there in the country where we all grew up, that didn't seem to be of much concern for anyone. Of course we were all worried but it was compensated by the prophetic diagnosis that kids who develop those kinds of scalp lesions grow up smart. (They must have been extra brain cells.) But anyway, the funny thing about that was, the old folks' way of getting rid of the "bukols" from your head Guess what? Now that I have some medical orientation, I can laugh about it. The folks' recommended treatment was for you to plant spider lilies. So your Inang dug up some spider lily bulbs from your Auntie Rosing's garden and had you plant them in your front yard. That was real weird, but it seemed to have worked because your lesions disappeared not long after you planted the lilies. And did you know who picked your name, by the way. Either you bribe him, which is what he is angling for, or you let him take your License. No ticket. Or maybe they could redesign the traffic enforcer's uniforms to exlude pockets hahaha... From: Zeus MessageI cannot understand the procedure of confiscating a driver license of offenders. We charged breakfast and lunches but we ate at one of the coworker's house. It was fun while it lasted. From: Mr Pogi MessageThe crackdown on unauthorized usages of "wang-wang" is indeed an early warning that the new president is dead serious for a lot of changes.Majority of these wangwang users are drivers using government-issued vehicles using this privilige kuno even without their government official, amo riding. One of the most abused practice in our country is abuse of power, and it begins with the practice of unneccesary, unofficial use of vehicles. On my last visit to PI i happened to came into an argument with a wife of a vice mayor in one of the metro manila cities when i asked the driver ,who was even parked in a disabled space,on a Sunday, while waiting for her amo(wifey of the vice) doing shopping at the Mall OF Asia..the driver said that wala raw pakialam ang mga tao kung ginagamit man ang vehicle dahil issue daw sa bise..what??i bet that day they are using gov't gas and gov't pay sa driver for their own personal usage..we really had a heated argument but to no avail matapang ang misis so i was really pissed off that it only shows how power can do in the political arena of the Philippines.... From: icarus MessageOutlawing the wang-wang could be considered petty the way most other Presidential actions go. But the essence of the matter is not the act itself but the message that it conveys. It is not even just about the traffic anymore. It has transformed into a symbol of our resolve to assert that no one should be above the law; and that laws, including traffic rules, should not be flouted or used to favour the VIPs while it disadvantaged the ordinary citizen, like me or you. Wang-wangs and blinkers on snobbish SUVs do not only effectively part the traffic, allowing their convoy to muscle through the mass of the commuting public. These are also very effective at driving wedges between the exasperated citizen and their elected public servants - turned arrogant rulers. Thus, the resentment built up on people who are patiently queuing and stewing in the big parking lot that is EDSA while they watch their Govt. officials force and swagger their way with the impunity of a freight train on a flock of helpless chickens. When P-Noy made his No wang-wang pronouncement, people took it as a sign - a portent of things to come... Social justice long denied them – is at last at the end of the long and dark tunnel! At last, the tyranny of arrogance and impunity may have seen their last! Let us not be cynics nor be sceptical of P-Noy’s intentions. Let us be supportive and sympathetic of his visions in the absence of any better option. The best way to throw a monkey wrench on anything is to mock it and yet offer no alternative in its place. This policy "wang-wang" is not that important and life changer to traffic users. Though I agree that indiscriminate use of it by Public officials is wrong. No one should use these devices aside from police and emergency services. But is Pnoy missing the big picture here? I believe, the most important issue is traffic regulation compliance. Overhaul the traffic system, road markings and the fiens/penalty regulations so NO corrupt policeman or even a lowly barangay tanod setting up a road block will make money out of the motorists thru triviality. I cannot understand the procedure of confescating a driver licence of offenders. Why not issue a ticket and let them go to the LTO and pay for it? set a guidelines of fines, say parking violation P500, traffic - P1,000 etc... And why can't the Filipino drivers STAY in Lane while driving?? if traffic regulations is observed am sure the flow of traffic is faster and wang-wang won't be needed by impatient men of ministers. I am delighted to read your posting and extremely proud to be associated with you. I hope you could post more often. Mng Vic is right, you are one heck of a writer! From: Icarus MessageI am impressed with the No Wang-wang policy of P-Noy. It is a very simple gesture, almost trivial but the message is disproportionately strong - Nobody, even the most powerful, must be exempted from the rules. Short and simple. But it spawns a lot of positive reactions. With one sentence, P-Noy have defanged a public annoyance which is the embodiment of arrogance and power by Govt. Officials and the elitist few. Suddenly, this indecent display of self-importance has become an object of ridicule. The very same people who once appropriated the roads for themselves by means of this blaring sirens and flashing lights had voluntarily turned them over to the LTO. The Ordinary motorist has also become more gracious, giving way voluntarily to P-Noy’s convoy out of respect and sense of duty and not because of an imposition by a wailing and blinding exhibition of political muscle. One good turn deserves another. It only goes to demonstrate that good old values like humility and sincerity still works. It only takes someone humble enough and strong enough to do what is right and to say no to what is wrong - no matter how convenient or how self-beneficial it may be. It won’t be surprising, and I hope it would be realized, that the goodwill and inspiration this little act created will flow over to other areas of ordinary life. Sana mawala na rin ang indiscriminate littering. Sana manumbalik ang sense of duty and patriotism sa bawat Filipino. Sana magkaroon na uli ng hiya ang mga nanlalamang. Di baling di tayo agad umunlad. Basta mabalik lang ang sense of fairness and equality … seguradong aangat ang bayan. To the naysayer, I say: Never, never underestimate the power of inspiration.
